What is Abdoser?

Abdoser is a Browser Hijacker. Browser Hijacker is a term used to describe a special type of software which can take over any browser and start spamming it with aggressive advertising materials like banners, ads, pop-ups, page redirects to sponsored pages and promotional links of various kinds. Using a highly secure browser such as Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer or Safari is not a guarantee that you won’t get tons of ads and unwanted components if you happen to accidentally install a browser hijacker on your computer, because hijacker software is normally quite effective in overcoming the anti-hijacker features and introducing its ad-generating settings to any browser. Still, the hijacker-based applications are not really viruses and they cannot cause any significant damage to the system – they are not like Ransomware, Trojans or Spyware in terms of their potential to cause problems.

It is important to mention that the browser hijackers are generally legitimate advertising tools, which are commonly used by different online-based businesses, software developers and marketers to promote their products, services and websites on the users’ screen. A lot of these programs may contain some free features which people may like. However, in most of the cases, the aggressive ad-generation, browser changes and sponsored page-redirects tend to cause irritation and disturbance to the normal web surfing. In the removal guide below, you will find details about the effective uninstallation of one recently reported hijacker app called Abdoser. There have been quite a lot of complaints from a number of users regarding this new representative of the hijacker family and, in case that you also find its activity a bit too intrusive, feel free to use the steps shown there to safely remove it.

Not a real danger but still potentially unwanted

A hijacker such as Abdoser or iStart Search Bar is unlikely to initiate anything that can be regarded as malicious. Its characteristics are quite different than the characteristics of a real malware threat (such as a Trojan Horse, a Worm or a Ransomware cryptovirus infection). That’s why it is generally not fatal if you have it on your computer. However, this does not mean that you should trust everything that the hijacker may display on your screen. Such software may show you different links, pop-up messages and offers but you should be careful with the content that you interact with because one accidental click may expose you to real computer dangers. Not to mention that you may get misled into purchasing products or services with questionable quality and origins or into filling in your personal data on some hazardous pages. That’s why, it is not a good idea to keep a browser hijacker on the system and to let it redirect you to its sponsored links and have control over your browser. Instead, use the instructions in the removal guide above and uninstall Abdoser in order to remove its ads and changes once and for all.

Step1 Uninstall the Abdoser app and kill its processes

The first thing you must try to do is look for any sketchy installs on your computer and uninstall anything you think may come from Abdoser. After that, you’ll also need to get rid of any processes that may be related to the unwanted app by searching for them in the Task Manager.

Note that sometimes an app, especially a rogue one, may ask you to install something else or keep some of its data (such as settings files) on your PC – never agree to that when trying to delete a potentially rogue software. You need to make sure that everything is removed from your PC to get rid of the malware. Also, if you aren’t allowed to go through with the uninstallation, proceed with the guide, and try again after you’ve completed everything else.

  • Uninstalling the rogue app
  • Killing any rogue processes

Type Apps & Features in the Start Menu, open the first result, sort the list of apps by date, and look for suspicious recently installed entries.

Click on anything you think could be linked to Abdoser, then select uninstall, and follow the prompts to delete the app.

delete suspicious apps

Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc, click More Details (if it’s not already clicked), and look for suspicious entries that may be linked to Abdoser.

If you come across a questionable process, right-click it, click Open File Location, scan the files with the free online malware scanner shown below, and then delete anything that gets flagged as a threat.

Delete Abdoser files and quit its processes.

After that, if the rogue process is still visible in the Task Manager, right-click it again and select End Process.

Step2 Undo Abdoser changes made to different system settings

It’s possible that Abdoser has affected various parts of your system, making changes to their settings. This can enable the malware to stay on the computer or automatically reinstall itself after you’ve seemingly deleted it. Therefore, you need to check the following elements by going to the Start Menu, searching for specific system elements that may have been affected, and pressing Enter to open them and see if anything has been changed there without your approval. Then you must undo any unwanted changes made to these settings in the way shown below:

    • DNS
    • Hosts
    • Startup
    • Task
      Scheduler
