Benefit Sites

Benefit Sites is an ad-spamming browser hijacker that installs in commonly used browsers for Mac, such as Firefox, Chrome, or Safari. The main goal of Benefit Sites is to bring ad-revenue to its creators.

Benefit Sites

The Benefit Sites App will display pop up ads and messages

In order to succeed in completing its goal, this app modifies the infected browser by adding a new search engine to it that replaces the old one and/or by changing the address of the homepage and new tab page. Those changes allow the hijacker to constantly page-redirect you to the sites it is programmed to promote as well as to fill your screen with various kinds of adverts, banners, and pop-ups. For the most part, this won’t harm your computer, but it may lead to some other indirect problems. For instance, oftentimes the advertising materials shown by apps like this one tend to be misleading and deceitful. In some cases, the promotional messages may outright lie to you or they may not even look like ads, to begin with. One example is when the hijacker is trying to get you to buy some other software so it shows you an advertisement that is designed to look like a warning message that tells you about hidden malware in your computer. The warning advises you to buy some removal tool (usually of low quality, or one that is outright fake) in order to clean your computer from the non-existent malware. This is only one of many examples of how browser hijackers can trick users.

Step1

We get asked this a lot, so we are putting it here: Removing parasite manually may take hours and damage your system in the process. We recommend downloading ComboCleaner to see if it can detect parasite files for you.

The first thing you need to do is to Quit Safari (if it is opened). If you have trouble closing it normally, you may need to Force Quit Safari:

You can choose the Apple menu and click on Force Quit.

Alternatively, you can simultaneously press (the Command key situated next to the space bar), Option (the key right next to it) and Escape (the key located at the upper left corner of your keyboard).

If you have done it right a dialog box titled Force Quit Applications will open up.

In this new dialog window select Safari, then press the Force Quit button, then confirm with Force Quit again.

Close the dialog box/window.

Step2

WARNING! READ CAREFULLY BEFORE PROCEEDING!

To remove parasite on your own, you may have to meddle with system files and registries. If you were to do this, you need to be extremely careful, because you may damage your system.

If you want to avoid the risk, we recommend downloading ComboCleaner
a professional malware removal tool.

The threat has likely infected all of your browsers. The instructions below need to be applied for all browsers you are using.

Again select Preferences in the Safari Menu, but this time click on the Privacy tab,
