Does Cgkreality “Virus” invade my PC to harm it?
We regularly receive queries from users whose browsers have been hijacked by applications like Cgkreality. Most of them usually are not aware of the real purpose of such software and often mistake it for some nasty virus or some sort of a Trojan or Ransomware based infection. However, there is no actual need for panic or concern because browser hijackers, in general, do not fall under any malware category. These pieces of software do not typically contain any harmful code and, unlike real viruses like Trojans, Ransomware or Spyware, are not considered to be a threat to any computer. Applications like Cgkreality “Virus” usually invade people’s browsers with the purpose of redirecting user to certain sponsored web locations and making them click on paid ads, pop-ups and tabs. Basically, the applications of this type serve as advertising tools. They are often part of aggressive Pay-Per-Click or Pay-Per-View marketing campaigns which generate income for their creators for every click or redirect. According to the most laws, however, this is a legitimate form of paid advertising, which helps various businesses to bring traffic to certain sites, to promote their products and services directly on the users’ screen and to make them more popular.

However, despite not being considered as harmful, such aggressive advertising has the potential to cause certain disturbances, mostly related to the users’ browsing habits. Many people find applications like Cgkreality problematic due to the sheer number of ads, pop-ups, banners and page redirects that get generated. A lot of users report that this software actually forces them to interact with web content that they had no actual intention of visiting and that it often exposes them to unfamiliar and sketchy web pages with questionable contents. What is more, the browser hijacker may often be programmed to perform detailed analysis of the users’ web searches, likes, shares and frequently visited pages. This is usually done in an attempt to gather more marketing information about their preferences and interests but may sometimes be seen as a privacy invasion. Fortunately, this activity of the hijacker is believed to mostly be harmless and to have no intention of harming the user’s computer, stealing their data or messing with their software. Still, keeping an application like Cgkreality on the system would hardly ever provide you with any actual beneficial features. That’s why, it is usually advisable to have it uninstalled. This could be done manually (see the Removal Guide below) or by scanning the machine with professional software such as the one available on this page.
Where can Cgkreality be found on the web and how can its installation be prevented?
Since applications like Cgkreality are often used to generate money through Pay-Per-Click or similar remuneration models, many software developers use them to promote their free software and “sponsor” it via clicks from paid ads. For this reason, browser hijackers may get commonly distributed in a bundle with various other applications, free programs and free download packages, which could oftentimes be found in open source platforms, torrent sites, freeware or shareware pages, spam, email messages, attachments and free download links. In order for users to prevent the installation of hijackers, they have to avoid such free bundles and their sources. Also, in case that something needs to be installed on the computer, it is highly advisable that you use the Advanced/Custom/Manual installation options instead of the Automatic/Quick ones. Otherwise, if applications like Cgkreality are bundled with a given setup and are not manually opted-out, they will start to operate on the computer when the installation completes.
|Danger Level||Medium (nowhere near threats like Ransomware, but still a security risk)|
|Symptoms||Annoying page redirects, homepage or search engine modifications|
|Distribution Method||Typically distributed via software bundles, free download links, torrents, open source platforms, sharware, spam.|
