Eewt

Eewt is a hazardous Windows virus that blackmails users after locking their most valuable data files. Virus threats like Eewt are known as Ransomware and they typically employ an encryption process in order to lock the files of their victims.

The Eewt ransomware will leave a _readme.txt file with instructions

You have most likely already heard about this category of hazardous malware programs and about how dangerous they could be. There, however, are certain things we need to make clear about Ransomware in this article for those of you who have been hit by such a virus.

First and foremost, what users need to realize about this type of threats like MmvbMmpu is that they don’t harm the computer. They also don’t damage the targeted files in the system. Instead, the applied encryption makes the data unusable and unrecognizable to any program without actually damaging it. This is important because it’s what gives the hackers behind the Ransomware the needed leverage to blackmail their victims for the release key for their files.

However, if you are a user who has no important files stored on their computer or if you have previously ensured to back up any important data on a separate device that is currently not infected, the negative impact from the Ransomware attack would be greatly mitigated. All you are required to do is have the virus removed which, in and of itself, isn’t that difficult to achieve.

The Eewt virus

The Eewt virus is a Ransomware threat the main target of which is the files that you store in your computer. The Eewt virus seeks to lock up those files using encryption and then make you pay for the corresponding private key that can unlock them.

The Eewt virus will encrypt your files

As we already mentioned, there wouldn’t be any need for acquiring said key and releasing your files if they aren’t that important or if you have safe and accessible copies of them on an external location. However, what should one do if that is not the situation and if the virus has indeed managed to lock some highly important pieces of data which haven’t been backed up? Well, in such a scenario, the first thing you ought to remember is that paying the ransom shouldn’t be your first course of action. The likelihood of wasting a big amount of money without getting anything that would allow you to access your data is too high and there is no reason for you to trust the hackers behind Eewt who promise to give you the decryption key. Instead, it is much more advisable to focus on potential alternatives.

The Eewt file encryption

The Eewt file encryption is a secret file-locking procedure that this Ransomware virus launches as soon as it enters the targeted computer. The Eewt file encryption keeps all data affected by it inaccessible and unrecognizable to any program until the matching private key is used.

However, as we said, paying for that key isn’t advisable. Instead, what you should do is try to remove the malware on your own and then explore the other potential methods of unlocking your data or recovering it from other locations. In the guide below, you will be given instructions regarding the removal of Eewt as well as several suggestions on how you might be able to bring some of the locked files back without sending the ransom.

After you open their folder, end the processes that are infected, then delete their folders.

Note: If you are sure something is part of the infection – delete it, even if the scanner doesn’t flag it. No anti-virus program can detect all infections.

Hold the Start Key and R –  copy + paste the following and click OK:

    notepad %windir%/system32/Drivers/etc/hosts

A new file will open. If you are hacked, there will be a bunch of other IPs connected to you at the bottom. Look at the image below:

If there are suspicious IPs below “Localhost” – write to us in the comments.

Type msconfig in the search field and hit enter. A window will pop-up:

Go in Startup —> Uncheck entries that have “Unknown” as Manufacturer.

    • Please note that ransomware may even include a fake Manufacturer name to its process. Make sure you check out every process here is legitimate.

Type Regedit in the windows search field and press EnterOnce inside, press CTRL and F together and type the virus’s Name.

Search for the ransomware  in your registries and delete the entries. Be extremely careful –  you can damage your system if you delete entries not related to the ransomware.

Type each of the following in the Windows Search Field:

    1. %AppData%
    2. %LocalAppData%
    3. %ProgramData%
    4. %WinDir%
    5. %Temp%

Delete everything in Temp. The rest just check out for anything recently added. Remember to leave us a comment if you run into any trouble!
