This page aims to help you remove Erebus Ransomware for free. Our instructions also cover how any Erebus file can be recovered.

Today’s article is about Erebus Ransomware – a version of Ransomware. You have probably heard this term. It refers to software that is capable of encrypting your files or blocking your screen; and then tends to harass you into paying a ransom in exchange for decrypting data or unblocking screens.
All the qualities of Erebus Ransomware in particular and Ransomware as a whole are thoroughly discussed in the text below. Take your time and read it carefully as you are facing the most hazardous cyber threat ever created – a ransom-requiring virus.

Ransomware – ways of functioning

The manner in which these viruses act is more or less similar, no matter what version of Ransomware you have caught- a ransom is going to be wanted from you by the hackers for undoing what they have done to your PC.

Provided that you have currently been dealing with an infection caused by any the file-encrypting versions of Ransomware, exactly what Erebus Ransomware represents, some of your files will be locked,  and a ransom will be required for setting that data free. To be completely precise, the programs like Erebus Ransomware can make your vital files totally inaccessible to you and you will be informed that the only way to access them again is to comply with the hackers and pay the ransom they want from you. Once such a program infects your computer, it will create a detailed list with all the to-be-encrypted files by scanning your drives and after that, all of them will be encoded.

The contamination that is bothering you could be a monitor-locking Ransomware  one. If this is the case, the screen of your PC (the laptops also), or the ones of your mobile devices (tablets and smartphones) are likely to be be blocked. No data becomes a victim of this software, however, it will be impossible for you to reach any folder, icon or shortcut and access your free data. However, the hackers will again inform you via a frightening message that you are supposed to pay a ransom for unlocking your screens. These infections are not as malicious as the ones caused by file-encrypting viruses, but could be equally difficult to fight.

Remove Erebus Ransomware

Some of the steps will likely require you to exit the page. Bookmark it for later reference.

Reboot in Safe Mode (use this guide if you don’t know how to do it).

We get asked this a lot, so we are putting it here: Removing parasite manually may take hours and damage your system in the process. We recommend downloading SpyHunter to see if it can detect parasite files for you.

Press CTRL + SHIFT + ESC at the same time and go to the Processes Tab. Try to determine which processes are dangerous.

Right click on each of them and select Open File Location. Then scan the files with our free online virus scanner:

Drag and Drop Files Here to Scan
Maximum file size: 128MB.

This scanner is free and will always remain free for our website's users. You can find its full-page version at: https://howtoremove.guide/online-virus-scanner/

After you open their folder, end the processes that are infected, then delete their folders.

After you open their folder, end the processes that are infected, then delete their folders.

Note: If you are sure something is part of the infection – delete it, even if the scanner doesn’t flag it. No anti-virus program can detect all infections.

Hold the Start Key and R –  copy + paste the following and click OK:

notepad %windir%/system32/Drivers/etc/hosts

A new file will open. If you are hacked, there will be a bunch of other IPs connected to you at the bottom. Look at the image below:

hosts_opt (1)

If there are suspicious IPs below “Localhost” – write to us in the comments.

Type msconfig in the search field and hit enter. A window will pop-up:

Go in Startup —> Uncheck entries that have “Unknown” as Manufacturer.

  • Please note that ransomware may even include a fake Manufacturer name to its process. Make sure you check out every process here is legitimate.

To remove parasite on your own, you may have to meddle with system files and registries. If you were to do this, you need to be extremely careful, because you may damage your system.

If you want to avoid the risk, we recommend downloading SpyHunter
a professional malware removal tool.

How to Decrypt Erebus Ransomware files

We have a comprehensive (and daily updated) guide on how to decrypt your files. Check it out here.

If the guide doesn’t help, download the anti-virus program we recommended or try our free online virus scanner. Also, you can always ask us in the comments for help!

How you are most likely to catch such a terrible virus as Erebus Ransomware:

The most popular sources of viruses similar to Erebus Ransomware are the ones we are going to mention below:

  • Spam emails and attachments:
    Ransomware could come from spam emails. In this case, it sometimes comes along with a Trojan horse virus. The Trojan acts in favour of  the Ransomware by looking for, finding and using  any system/program vulnerability, and allowing Erebus Ransomware inside the infected system.  The email attachments may also contain this type of malware – even the photos and documents, not only the attached executive files. After that the scenario is always the same, some blocking happens and you are supposed to pay for the unlocking of your screen or your data. ;
  • Fake advertisements and system requests that could be broadcast on your screen:
It is possible that such a virus will automatically come from a contagious advertisement, system request or other pop-up of any kind that gets displayed on your screen for any reason. As soon as you click on such, even if this happens accidentally, your PC catches the malware they lead to directly.
  • File, software and torrent-sharing websites:
Even though all websites may be malware-containing, the ones that (perhaps) illegally share movies, software and other torrents are the most likely to be contaminated.

Is there a right choice – pay or not to pay, when we talk about a Ransomware version like Erebus Ransomware?

To be honest, you need to make a decision , and either choice will be risky, whatever you decide to do about the ongoing infection with Erebus Ransomware . Even if you complete the requested payment, your files may never be accessible to you again. Such viruses are extremely difficult to remove and  even some experts could find it complex to deal with them. Our honest opinion is that you should restrain from paying off the hackers and could try the Removal Guide below first. Then you may consider paying the ransom. We cannot promise your files will be returned, but at least you will not be doing business with criminals in this way.
