The malicious software identified as Ransomware is generally the most harmful and intrusive kind of malware.  Its representatives are considered especially dangerous since their potential effects on your devices can be disastrous – the most valuable of your files might get encrypted. After sealing whatever the virus considers important on your PC, this terrible threat can proceed with showing a ransom alert. The warning inside such a demand message states that if you refuse to pay the ransom the hackers want; you will have to deal with a permanent loss of access to whatever that has been blocked. Here we will be reviewing one specific Ransomware version that can be blamed for file encryption and ransom-related harassment. It is called Fenrir. Continue reading the following text to learn more about Ransomware in general terms and the virus called Fenrir in particular.

Ransomware-related trivia:

The viruses referred to as Ransomware are considered to have first been developed in Russia somewhere around the last two decades of the XX century. In the beginning there used to be two main types of Ransomware-based malware:

  1. Data-encrypting: the particular subcategory Fenrir belongs to. These viruses infiltrate PCs, and after that research all their storages for the most regularly accessed data. Following that, all such files get encrypted with a special, often quite complex, key that is normally extremely hard to deal with. Such malware will later send ransom-demanding messages once it is finished with the encryption of your important files. Inside such a message, you will find some additional warnings and some elaborate payment-related guideliness.
  2. Screen-affecting: this kind of viruses is believed to infect computers in the same way as the ones from the other group. The difference between these two subgroups is that the screen-affecting viruses can just block the victim user’s desktop with a very big ransom-requesting notification. In fact, no files fall preys of any encryption. Only the screen is made unavailable to you. Nonetheless, a ransom is again demanded and you will see all the payment details in the alert, which blocks your desktop.
  3. Mobile devices targeting: such programs can infiltrate phones and tablets. The way such a virus functions in this case may really look like the way the screen-affecting malware works. The procedure is the same, just the affected devices are different.

How to Decrypt Fenrir files

If the guide doesn’t help, download the anti-virus program we recommended or try our free online virus scanner. Also, you can always ask us in the comments for help!

How does such a virus get around?

Fenrir and the other Ransomware-like viruses can get distributed in numerous ways. They might be included in some contaminated emails; and in their attachments as well. One more usual source of such malware is the so-called  ‘malvertising’. Some web pages generate fake ads leading to malware, and as soon as you click on such an online advertisement, you automatically download the virus it hides. Another standard means of distribution can be any drive-by download from contaminated websites; also some contagious shareware or torrents are very likely to contain different types of viruses.

Is it possible to remove Fenrir? Is there a way to restore the affected data?

Discussing the infections caused by Ransomware, it is recommended that you keep in mind no activities on your side WILL EVER guarantee the complete restoration of the encrypted files, or the successful removal of Fenrir. In case you succeed in getting rid of this danger, your files might still be lost for good. Even if you make a decision to REALLY PAY the requested ransom, the cyber criminals may just disappear with your money, and your data could remain inaccessible forever. Because all the prospects are not in your favor when dealing with such a contamination, we suggest that you should take the risk of not paying the ransom, and check out what your alternative options are. Indeed, you will lose nothing in this case.

Some of the possible solutions might include contacting an individual who has valuable experience in removing and generally dealing with such viruses. It might turn out to be the solution you need. Perhaps, on the other hand, the solution lies in a trustworthy Removal Guide, like the one we have here. Check out and utilize our suggestion: the Removal Guide below. Whatever you decide to proceed with, keep in mind that in the war against Ransomware, your most powerful weapon will always be prevention. If you want to avoid all kinds of data-encryption, simply back up your files from now on as often as you can and keep the copies on an external drive.
