Finestream is a web search rerouting application that can redirect user searches to random websites. According to security professionals, Finestream is not a virus, but if not removed, this program can make unwanted changes in the web browser’s settings and stream a lot of ads during the web browsing sessions.
Every browser hijacker, including Finestream, is about making its presence known in the most irritating manner. Unlike viruses and malware (such as Ransomware or Trojans) which hide their traces for as long as possible, a browser hijacker will integrate with your main web browser (it doesn’t matter if it is Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Opera, Safari, etc.), install its own homepage and/or search engine and begin to direct you to pre-defined websites. On top of that, such software may fill every webpage that you visit with pay-per-click ads, pop-up notifications, colorful banners and other aggressive commercials that prompt you to purchase some products or download some software from random sites.
And what is particularly irritating is the fact that uninstalling this software is not quite the same as the uninstallation of any other program. Even the ads that Finestream displays on the screen cannot be removed like regular ads as clicking on them only leads to more ads and reroutes to more random sites. How can a browser hijacker affect your device?
Many web users are not aware of what a regular browser hijacker can do. Therefore, they frequently consider it as some sort of a page-redirect virus. The good news is that this software is not as harmful as, say a Trojan horse or a Ransomware virus, and is not able to damage the device it has been installed on in any way. Yet, security experts classify the browser hijackers as potentially unwanted, because they do have a number of features that can affect the computer’s performance.
For instance, programs like Finestream can exploit a lot of system RAM and CPU resources to perform their ad-generating and page-redirecting activities. This may result in unpleasant system lags, unresponsiveness and even sudden crashes of the hijacked web browser and other programs. Besides, apps like Finestream may indirectly expose the computer to web content that may carry real cyber threats such as Trojans, Ransomware, Rootkits, Spyware, and other viruses. This can happen as a result from the constant redirects to random sites. As a matter of fact, no one guarantees the reliability of the ads and the websites on display. Therefore, people with malicious intentions may easily take advantage of that by sneaking malvertisements and infected links inside the regular ads streaming.

Reboot in Safe Mode (use this guide if you don’t know how to do it).
WARNING! READ CAREFULLY BEFORE PROCEEDING!
Press CTRL + SHIFT + ESC at the same time and go to the Processes Tab (the “Details” Tab on Win 8 and 10). Try to determine which processes are dangerous.
Right click on each of them and select Open File Location. Then scan the files with our free online virus scanner:

After you open their folder, end the processes that are infected, then delete their folders.
Note: If you are sure something is part of the infection – delete it, even if the scanner doesn’t flag it. No anti-virus program can detect all infections.
Hold together the Start Key and R. Type appwiz.cpl –> OK.
You are now in the Control Panel. Look for suspicious entries. Uninstall it/them.
Type msconfig in the search field and hit enter. A window will pop-up:
Startup —> Uncheck entries that have “Unknown” as Manufacturer or otherwise look suspicious.
To remove parasite on your own, you may have to meddle with system files and registries. If you were to do this, you need to be extremely careful, because you may damage your system.

Hold the Start Key and R – copy + paste the following and click OK:
A new file will open. If you are hacked, there will be a bunch of other IPs connected to you at the bottom. Look at the image below:
If there are suspicious IPs below “Localhost” – write to us in the comments.
Open the start menu and search for Network Connections (On Windows 10 you just write it after clicking the Windows button), press enter.
- Right-click on the Network Adapter you are using —> Properties —> Internet Protocol Version 4 (ICP/IP), click Properties.
- The DNS line should be set to Obtain DNS server automatically. If it is not, set it yourself.
- Click on Advanced —> the DNS tab. Remove everything here (if there is something) —> OK.
- After you complete this step, the threat will be gone from your browsers. Finish the next step as well or it may reappear on a system reboot.
Right click on the browser’s shortcut —> Properties.
NOTE: We are showing Google Chrome, but you can do this for Firefox and IE (or Edge).
Properties —–> Shortcut. In Target, remove everything after .exe.
Remove Finestream from Internet Explorer:
Open IE, click —–> Manage Add-ons.
Find the threat —> Disable. Go to —–> Internet Options —> change the URL to whatever you use (if hijacked) —> Apply.
Remove Finestream from Firefox:
Open Firefox, click ——-> Add-ons —-> Extensions.
Find the adware/malware —> Remove.
Remove Finestream from Chrome:
Close Chrome. Navigate to:
C:/Users/!!!!USER NAME!!!!/AppData/Local/Google/Chrome/User Data. There is a Folder called “Default” inside:
Rename it to Backup Default. Restart Chrome.
Type Regedit in the windows search field and press Enter.
Inside, press CTRL and F together and type the threat’s Name. Right click and delete any entries you find with a similar name. If they don’t show up this way, go manually to these directories and delete/uninstall them:
- HKEY_CURRENT_USER—-Software—–Random Directory. It could be any one of them – ask us if you can’t discern which ones are malicious.
HKEY_CURRENT_USER—-Software—Microsoft—Internet Explorer—-Main—- Random
