There is a new Ransomware threat lurking in the web space nowadays. The name of this new infection is Gandcrab v3 – a file-encrypting virus, which you definitely don’t want to encounter. In this article, we are going to share a few tips on how to avoid this and other nasty malicious programs, so make sure you carefully read the paragraphs that follow. If Gandcrab v3 has already attacked your system, then you will probably want to check out our detailed Removal Guide which might enable you to get rid of the malware and also liberate some of your locked-up data. Gandcrab v3 is known for its ability to block the access to all of your files by encrypting them with a very complex algorithm. Not only that, but it can also blackmail you to pay a ransom for their decryption key. Unfortunately, this infection could be awfully hard to remove and the consequences of its malicious encryption may also not be easy to deal with. In the next lines, however, we will do our best to help you by giving you some alternatives to the ransom payment, which may eventually help you recover some of the files.

Gandcrab v3 –  a nasty file-encrypting Ransomware piece!

Ransomware is probably one of the most challenging types of malware one could come across these days. Without wanting to scare you, the viruses of this type operate quite differently from most of the well-known computer infections which is one of the reason why Ransomware is so notoriously problematic and dangerous. Such viruses follow a specific order of steps, which ensures their malicious activity remains undetected until a ransom notification gets displayed on the victim’s screen. Gandcrab v3 operates in the same principal and this is how it applies its nasty encryption:

  • Firstly, a thorough scan is performed on the infected computer;
  • All files on the PC that belong to certain predetermined file formats are targeted by the virus ;
  • A very complex encryption algorithm is applied to each and every file that the malware has targeted.
  • Then, a secret decryption key is generated at the hackers’ servers.
  • When all the targeted data is encrypted, a scary ransom message gets displayed on the victim’s screen. The message serves the purpose of informing the user that, if they want to have the files released, a ransom would need to be paid. Also, there are strict instructions, which explain how to pay ransom in order to receive the secret decryption key for the files.

How to Decrypt Gandcrab v3 files

We have a comprehensive (and daily updated) guide on how to decrypt your files. Check it out here.

How should you act if you see a ransom message on your screen?

The best thing our “How to remove” team would advise to do you in a case that a Ransomware like Gandcrab v3 has encrypted your files and has placed its ransom demanding message on your screen is to give yourself some time. Do not act out of fear and frustration and do not pay the ransom immediately! Unfortunately, sending your money to hackers doesn’t really guarantee the liberation of your data. The files may still remain encrypted and you may still need to look for alternative solutions because once the crooks receive your money, there is nothing on earth that could make them send you the decryption key if they don’t feel like doing it. Though in most cases the users who pay do receive the needed key, there are still more than enough examples where the opposite has happened and the users didn’t get anything in return for their money. So, don’t fall into this tricky blackmailing scheme and check out the suggested solutions below.

Can Gandcrab v3 be removed effectively? Can the files be recovered?

It is really difficult to answer these questions because each and every Ransomware case can be different and the removal and the recovery from the attack pretty much depend on the way the malware has affected your system. If you have some file backups on an external drive or on a cloud, you may be able to restore some of your files. The first thing, however, is to make sure that Gandcrab v3 has been completely removed from your PC. The instructions in the Removal Guide below may help you with this task. You can also check out the attached file-recovery steps or contact a professional of your choice for additional assistance. Just explore all the available alternatives and do not be too quick to execute the payment.

Healthy browsing and Ransomware prevention tips:

The key to a safe computer is to keep yourself away from potential malware transmitters and insecure web locations. Threats like Gandcrab v3, unfortunately, use many different transmitters, and avoiding them all may not always be possible. However, if you are more selective about the content you interact with, you may significantly reduce the chances of such a virus encounter. Start with your email inbox and avoid spam and messages from unfamiliar senders. Do not open or download attachments without scanning them with your antivirus and avoid clicking on redirect links and pop-ups. Some sites may also deliver Ransomware and other infections, so stick to reputed web locations and don’t visit sketchy pages. Keep your operating system updated and eliminate possible vulnerabilities as these could easily be exploited by Trojans, which can secretly infect your computer with a threat like Gandcrab v3.
