This page aims to help you remove GreyStars Ransomware for free. Our instructions also cover how any GreyStars file can be recovered.

If you ask us which are the most numerous online infections, no doubt the answer would be the ones caused by the Trojan horse viruses. However, if you ask us which are the most malicious and difficult to counteract, then the Ransomware typically wins the top place. This type of malware is very different from most of the known computer threats and the harm it causes is directed mostly towards the access to your files to the infected machine. A threat like GreyStars, for instance, can encrypt your most valuable data and keep it hostage for an indefinite period of time. If you want to reverse the encryption and access any of the affected files, you will be asked to pay ransom.  There are also other types of Ransomware threats, which we will talk about below, so if you want to gain a better understanding of them, don’t miss the information in the next paragraphs. If you have fallen victim to GreyStars Ransomware, then stay with us because here, you will find a detailed Removal Guide and a trusted GreyStars removal tool, which may help you get rid of this infection.

Ransomware – important details and features:

Ransomware is a special malware group of viruses, which pose a significant challenge to the cyber security experts nowadays. The threats of this type are considered to be some of the most difficult to handle mostly because it is not always possible to remove the negative consequences of their attack. Such viruses can infect you without any visible signs and can get down to their malicious business automatically, as soon as you have clicked on their transmitter.

Ransomware, generally, consists of a few sub-categories:

  • File-encrypting Ransomware – this is the most popular and the most malicious sub-category. GreyStars is a typical representative, which uses a secret encryption algorithm in order to render your most valuable files inaccessible and then ask you to pay a ransom for a decryption key. Both the removal of the virus and the file-restoration of the locked data could be very difficult after the attack because the infection hides deep in the system and usually uses an algorithm, which is extremely difficult to crack. Basically, the affected data may never be accessible again unless a proper decryption key is applied.
  • Screen-locking Ransomware: This is a less popular, yet, still, a very unpleasant category. The viruses of this type do not encrypt your files, but they place a ransom-demanding banner spreading over the entire screen of the infected device and demand a ransom for the banner to be removed. Unless the said banner gets eliminated, you would not be able to access anything on your computer. These threats target not only computers and laptops but also tablets, smartphones, and other portable digital devices.
  • Ransomware, used by the authorities – Now this is a very limited category, which contains specially developed programs, which serve the needs of the government authorities when they try to punish criminals. In this case, basically, the Ransomware principle is applied against the crooks, which are forced to pay for their crimes.

notepad %windir%/system32/Drivers/etc/hosts

A new file will open. If you are hacked, there will be a bunch of other IPs connected to you at the bottom. Look at the image below:

hosts_opt (1)

If there are suspicious IPs below “Localhost” – write to us in the comments.

Type msconfig in the search field and hit enter. A window will pop-up:

Go in Startup —> Uncheck entries that have “Unknown” as Manufacturer.

  • Please note that ransomware may even include a fake Manufacturer name to its process. Make sure you check out every process here is legitimate.

How to Decrypt GreyStars files

We have a comprehensive (and daily updated) guide on how to decrypt your files. Check it out here.

If the guide doesn’t help, download the anti-virus program we recommended or try our free online virus scanner. Also, you can always ask us in the comments for help!

How to deal with GreyStars?

We don’t want to give you any false hopes – dealing with GreyStars is a challenging task and there may not be an actual solution, which can provide a complete recovery from the attack. Once the infection has already taken place and the secret file-encryption has been applied to your data, the only thing that may surely help you recover it is a complete file backup that has been previously set up. If you keep copies of your files on an external drive or a on a cloud service online, this is the time to use them and minimize the data loss to some extent. However, you should not connect any backup sources to your infected computer while the Ransomware virus is still there! First, make sure you remove GreyStars completely, otherwise, it may encrypt your backups as well. The Removal Guide below is also designed to help you with the task of restoring some of your files so give it a go if the Ransomware virus has locked-up your files. There are file-restoration instructions, attached to it  yet, as we said above, we can’t promise that the documents will be recovered in all cases. Here are some other possible alternatives, which you may like to try instead of giving your money to some anonymous criminals:

  • Purchase a powerful anti-virus software and use its help to clean your machine from the virus.
  • Contact a nearby professional in the Ransomware-removal filed and consult with him.
  • Browse for more solutions about GreyStars and seek for opinions in forums and blogs.

You never know whether something may work unless you give it a try. It is always better to check for possible alternative options instead of sponsoring this criminal blackmailing practice.
