How to avoid becoming infected by Ads by DealShark and similar adware
Tracing back the origins of the infection shouldn’t be too hard, but the more important thing is to realize how you became infected. Ultimately nearly all adware relies on the user to grant it access – in one way or another. Therefore creators of such programs employ misdirection tactics, preying on people’s inexperience or lack of attention to the details. Below is a short list of popular methods of spreading.
- Fake download sites that copy your search query and provide “perfect” result – which is an .exe file containing the virus. Note that these will always mimic your search, but the extension will universally be .exe. Pay attention to the type of file you want, because most of the time it will not be an executable file. First time torrent users are often victims of this trap.
- The free program package – which is basically a free program that has some type of adware or unwanted toolbar bundled in the installer. Because few things in life are ultimately free, the same applies to freeware apps. Their creators often get paid by toolbar and adware creators to be included in the installer. Usually there is a disclaimer in the installer – and check boxes to untick if you don’t want these pests.
Mail or skypebombs – oldschool but just as dangerous, already infected computers send mails and messages with the virus as an attached file. Simple don’t download them unless the sender confirms the file’s legitimacy.
