Ads by DiscountSmasher Overview
- Discount Smasher is an adware based virus that you should consider deleting immediately. Its removal can be generally both time consuming and exhausting, because malware of this type are especially persistent, so be careful to follow the instructions below to the letter. But other than that, adware are not very capable of damaging your PC.
- If you feel your PC has slowed down significantly – it has. That’s all due to Ads by DiscountSmasher. The advertisements are simulated and created by your PC, they are not part of the actual pages, so all the weightlifting is done by your machine. As soon as you remove the virus, this will stop.
- Here’s the first significant heads up we should give you: clicking on the advertisements can be very problematic. They frequently land you on pages completely unrelated to the product you were viewing, and these pages are practically filled with malware.
- Many users arrange the programs in the add/remove panel by date, because it is easier to spot the newest programs, since once you contract a virus, the latest program is probably the malware. Ads by DiscountSmasher and newer adware though, have gotten smarter and may show up with a back date.
WARNING! READ HERE! If you encounter messages about missing plugins, updates of legitimate programs, or recommendations to install specific software before continuing – these are all part of the malware. They are fakes, and if you click on them, the end result will be that another virus will start freely roaming in your system.
How To Avoid Ads by DiscountSmasher (And Other Malware)
Ads by DiscountSmasher typically comes via other software; our internal research shows that over 70% of the infections are caused by this. Free programs are well-documented in numerous cases to be the prime suspects. If you can recall recently installing such a one, then it’s probably the one to blame.
However there are ways to spot adware from afar. One is to skim through the EULA and look for any mentions of third-party advertisements. Another is to simply view carefully each step of every installation. That’s because whoever bundles these things with other programs HAS to inform you, albeit offhandedly about the existence of the advertisements. So much of the time, setups infected with malware look like this:
Much of the time these lines can be disguised under a dropdown menu that only shows up when you click on Custom Install. Express Install always hides it, so make sure to click on Custom. What the virus creators are basically banking on is that you won’t be keeping an eye out for their creations.
Other ways to catch a virus include opening spam email or corrupted links, but there’s little you can do about this, except being careful.
