Dear reader, the following article contains a guide for removing Ads by Savvy Suggestor. It is a virus of the adware variety, which functions by spamming your browser with advertisements, fake updates for other programs and plug-ins like Flash or Java. Please read the instructions carefully to be able to safely get rid of the annoyance that is Ads by Savvy Suggestor. Note that viruses of its type cannot infect your PC unless the user (you or someone else that used your computer) gives them access.
Since you are already infected it is very important to minimize further damage. Read below.
As mentioned above Ads by Savvy Suggestor generates fake advertisements and updates. There may be even offers for “free” malware cleaner apps. DO NOT CLICK ON THEM. All of this is more malware. What you should do is ignore everything. Any windows opened with download prompts should be terminated by the task manager (press Ctr-Alt-Del). If you don’t interact with it you will prevent further infections, but that doesn’t mean you ought to ignore it altogether! While your PC is infected the virus collects information about you – through your browsing history or even your passwords for on-line services. And at some point (usually a week or two after infection) it will send your info to its creator. Once you’ve removed Ads by Savvy Suggestor from your machine, change the passwords of everything you deem important!
Infection and prevention
As previously mention. Ads by Savvy Suggestor and its brethren rely on user misdirection to latch onto a computer. Recent batches of malware utilize several popular methods of tricking you, such as:
Free program bundles – well free software is sweet, because it has no price tag attached. Sometimes it is even better then paid software – but usually the catch is security and control. It is much easier to hijack a legitimate free software program and attach malware to it. Sometimes even the original creator may be forced to add some semi-legit ad-ware toolbar – just to pay the bills. Prevention here is easy – just pay attention when installing software. Always click advanced options if able and untick the boxes that allow the ad-ware install.
“Chameleon” sites as I like to call them – these are quick&dirty virus sites that match the keywords you are searching for and offer an immediate download, which is of course a virus. This will always be an .exe file or some type of archive with an .exe file inside. Pay attention to that because usually the type you need should have another extension.
