A new Ransomware cryptovirus, which the security experts have named Korrumpedia.org Ransomware, is using a very complex file-encryption, which blocks the access to the personal files of the user of the infected PC. This infection has various ways for getting distributed and can be caught from multiple online sources. The moment it finds its way inside the computer, Korrumpedia.org almost immediately starts a system scan for specific file types and then applies a very complex encryption algorithm on each and every one of them. The complex algorithm renders the files inaccessible and keeps them hostage until a certain amount of money (usually in Bitcoins) is paid for a decryption key.

The scheme of the hackers is to blackmail the victims for the purchase of that key. For that reason, they usually place a ransom message somewhere on the desktop of the computer or inside the folders of the encrypted data. The ransom message of Korrumpedia.org basically states a ransom payment should be made, otherwise, the files would never get unlocked. If you landed on this page because you have been attacked by this Ransomware, you might want to read the next lines on this page. The information below will help you decide how to deal with the infection, and how to recover from its attack.

How is Korrumpedia.org spreading throughout the web?

We already mentioned above that Ransomware has many ways to enter the users’ system. In most of the cases, the malware gets distributed via massive spam email campaigns, which the hackers organize in an attempt to infect as many people as possible. Typically, the harmful script is hidden inside a harmless looking file, (it could be an invoice, a PDF document, an archive, etc.), an installer, an ad or a link, which activates the moment you click on it. According to some recent reports, Korrumpedia.org may also spread via Trojan horse infections, which are famous for their ability to deliver Ransomware. That’s why, in order to avoid such nasty threats, it is best if you stay away from shady sites, emails from unknown senders, spam, installation kits from non-reputed developers or any other questionable content. We also highly recommend you to have a trusted antivirus software installed on your system as this is one of the best ways to catch potential malware transmitters before they have attacked you.

What should you do if Korrumpedia.org has encrypted your data?

Many users, taken over by panic and frustration, don’t research well their alternatives and rush into paying the money, requested by the hackers. Such course of action, unfortunately, is not the smartest one to take because despite being promised to receive a decryption key, once you pay the ransom, there is no guarantee you will really receive one. The hackers, who stand behind Korrumpedia.org, are criminals and there is absolutely no reason to trust them. What if they decide to increase the demamded ransom sum and ask you for more money again and again? Or worse, what if they vanish the moment they get the payment without sending you anything? Relying solely on their mercy and their mood is obviously risky, that’s why we would generally advise you not to give them your money. What we would suggest instead is to try some alternatives.

Without the special decryption key, there may not be that many other promising file-recovery methods, but we will try to point out some, which may eventually save some of your data. File backups are the best source you can use in case of a Ransomware attack. If you keep copies of your files somewhere on external drives, cloud storage or other devices, you can use them. If you don’t have backups, don’t lose hope yet. Check out the instructions in the guide that our “How to remove” team has prepared. They may help you extract some files from your system. You may also contact a professional of your choice, but before you proceed to your file-recovery attempts, make sure you remove Korrumpedia.org and all of its traces! Don’t leave the malware on the computer because if you manage to recover something, it may get encrypted again.
