What is a Trojan horse and how can it infect you?
Trojan horses, or in short Trojans, are very malicious pieces of software which are commonly used by cyber criminals for a wide range of harmful deeds and activities. Such pieces of software can infect you in many ways, usually when you least expect it because they use tactics such as “social engineering” in order to trick the web users into running them on their PCs. MnuBot, for example, as one of the recently detected representatives of this malware category, can mask itself as a harmless-looking file, an application, an email link or attachment, a free software installer, a torrent or an ad and you may happen to click on it after getting misled by its appearance. Sadly, there is a great chance that you may come across Trojan horse transmitters and interact with them thinking that you are actually interacting with legitimate and harmless content. As per some recent statistics, these malware threats are some of the most widely distributed computer threats on the Internet and due to their ability to remain hidden during the infection, they have become one of the hackers’ favorite tools for various types of cyber-crimes.

What can a threat like MnuBot do to your computer?
Different types of fraud and theft could be performed by a Trojan horse like MnuBot. Once inside the machine, this malware can launch various malicious scripts without your knowledge. For instance, it may set a data tracking service and spy on all of your activities from the moment you turn the computer to the moment you turn it off. The malware may target your files, your passwords, online accounts and login credentials, some work-related information or sensitive details about your personal life. All this information could be transmitted to the hackers’ servers and then used by them in various types of crimes. From blackmailing to draining your bank accounts, compromising your online profiles or obtaining sensitive details about your company. The crooks can also gain remote control to an infected machine and use the computer in different ways without the user’s knowledge. What is more, MnuBot may be used as a backdoor for other viruses such as Ransomware, Spyware, and similar nasty infections. Therefore, if you don’t detect and remove the Trojan on time, you may suddenly find your PC filled with all sorts of malware.
How to protect yourself?
Unfortunately, the Trojan horse infections are one of the nastiest threats you could possibly encounter as they are very stealthy and also typically have the ability to carry out different activities on the infected PC which might lead to all sorts of issues for the user. Trojans steadily continue to increase in numbers and popularity and newer and more advanced versions such as MnuBot keep causing serious issues to the online users. The sophisticated infection tactics that the criminals employ oftentimes pose a serious challenge to even some of the most experienced security experts and professionals.
Some of the best options to protect your PC from Trojans so far is the presence of reliable antivirus and anti-malware software on the system. If regularly updated to the latest virus definitions, such software, in most of the cases, can recognize a well-camouflaged malicious transmitter and take the necessary actions to remove it. Of course, you shouldn’t solely rely on your antivirus to keep your PC safe. You need to also be more careful when you browse the Internet. It is highly advisable not to download and install programs from non-reputed developers or click on every pop-up, ad or notification that appears on your screen while you’re browsing. Carefully check your emails and don’t open links and attachments from unknown senders. All in all, try to be smarter than the hackers and keep your system clean and safe so that no Trojan could compromise it. In the guide below, we will also show you how to effectively remove MnuBot so go ahead and have a look at it if you need the help.
