The typical thing about this type of software is the fact that it is normally able to hijack all your browsers (Firefox, Chrome, Edge and all the others more or less famous ones that you might use) and modify their behavior in various ways. Some general details regarding browser hijackers
All programs that function as hijackers have been created to serve as advertising tools. Indeed, these ad-generating products have as their sole purpose the production of a noticeable number of pop-ups, banners, box messages and other forms of ads as well as the promotion of different search engines and browser homepages.
That way, this type of program can generate high amounts of revenue for their creators. Online advertising is indeed a highly-profitable business and one can earn significant amounts of money by promoting various third-party products and online services. The model that allows for such revenue generation is what is known as Pay-Per-Click. With this model, each click on an ad created by the hijacker translates into a certain (small) amount of money. On a larger scale, this can actually accumulate rather sizable sum of money for the hijacker’s creator.
How can MP3fy be spread so that so many people get it?
In the majority of the cases we are aware of – you are very likely to stumble across such hijackers when you visit a contagious website or download a torrent. Such an irritation may also come from some ads you could unintentionally follow while online. However, it is very common for MP3fy and similar applications to come as components of software bundles, which you might be tempted to install on your own on your device.

If you’re wondering what a bundle is, it’s a software program normally getting distributed for free and which may include games, programs, apps and, of course, hijackers as optional installs. Generally, there is nothing to worry about when it comes to such bundles. Still, the ad-generating component inside them might make these bundles less than desirable.
Dealing with bundles
Such bundles could indeed contain some useful programs and apps and you could install those without getting the hijacker that might be inside. Just make sure you follow this general tip:
Whatever you decide to install on your computer, make sure that you select the Advanced (or the Custom) installation feature of the setup wizard. That way every single detail about the bundle you are getting installed will be shown and you will surely see which components exactly you might need on your PC, and which ones you need to leave uninstalled.
MP3fy isn’t a real virus
Regardless of the popular misbelief, most hijackers are different from actual dangerous viruses. Still, due to their suspicious features, browser hijackers have been regarded as ‘potentially unwanted’. Nevertheless, there are hardly ever any direct damaging effects that come from a hijacker to the PC it has been installed on. There are some considerable differences between the real forms of malware and these browser redirect programs. For instance, ransomware and Trojans as some of the most notable malware versions, are capable of:
- invading your device without your (willing or unwilling) permission;
- using any system/program vulnerability as a backdoor.

Press CTRL + SHIFT + ESC at the same time and go to the Processes Tab (the “Details” Tab on Win 8 and 10). Try to determine which processes are dangerous.
Right click on each of them and select Open File Location. Then scan the files with our free online virus scanner:
After you open their folder, end the processes that are infected, then delete their folders.
Note: If you are sure something is part of the infection – delete it, even if the scanner doesn’t flag it. No anti-virus program can detect all infections.
Hold together the Start Key and R. Type appwiz.cpl –> OK.
You are now in the Control Panel. Look for suspicious entries. Uninstall it/them.
Type msconfig in the search field and hit enter. A window will pop-up:
Startup —> Uncheck entries that have “Unknown” as Manufacturer or otherwise look suspicious.
Hold the Start Key and R – copy + paste the following and click OK:
notepad %windir%/system32/Drivers/etc/hosts
A new file will open. If you are hacked, there will be a bunch of other IPs connected to you at the bottom. Look at the image below:
If there are suspicious IPs below “Localhost” – write to us in the comments.
Open the start menu and search for Network Connections (On Windows 10 you just write it after clicking the Windows button), press enter.
- Right-click on the Network Adapter you are using —> Properties —> Internet Protocol Version 4 (ICP/IP), click Properties.
- The DNS line should be set to Obtain DNS server automatically. If it is not, set it yourself.
- Click on Advanced —> the DNS tab. Remove everything here (if there is something) —> OK.
- After you complete this step, the threat will be gone from your browsers. Finish the next step as well or it may reappear on a system reboot.
Right click on the browser’s shortcut —> Properties.
NOTE: We are showing Google Chrome, but you can do this for Firefox and IE (or Edge).
Properties —–> Shortcut. In Target, remove everything after .exe.
Open IE, click 
Find the threat —> Disable. Go to
Open Firefox, click 
Find the adware/malware —> Remove.
Close Chrome. Navigate to:
C:/Users/!!!!USER NAME!!!!/AppData/Local/Google/Chrome/User Data. There is a Folder called “Default” inside:
Rename it to Backup Default. Restart Chrome.

Type Regedit in the windows search field and press Enter.
Inside, press CTRL and F together and type the threat’s Name. Right click and delete any entries you find with a similar name. If they don’t show up this way, go manually to these directories and delete/uninstall them:
- HKEY_CURRENT_USER—-Software—–Random Directory. It could be any one of them – ask us if you can’t discern which ones are malicious.
