Welcome to How To Remove Guide. On this page, you will find useful information about a program called New Tab Review, as well as a detailed Removal Guide with instructions on how to remove it. Technically, New Tab Review can be classified as a browser hijacker. This type of software is not considered a computer virus and is nowhere near threats like Trojans or Ransomware. Despite its rather harmless nature, however, a browser hijacker may often create browsing irritation and disturbance because its major activity includes changing the browser’s homepage or search engine, redirecting the web searches and displaying a huge number of ads, banners, and intrusive pop-ups. It doesn’t really matter if you are using a popular browser like Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer or some other browsing program – a piece like New Tab Review can easily install its components and “hijack” it. If you want to bring your settings back to normal and remove the nagging ads, you basically need to uninstall all these components. Fortunately, this does not require the services of a security specialist and with the help of the instructions below, we believe you can handle the browser hijacker effectively.

What does a “browser hijacker” really mean?

Browser hijackers in general, are all types of software that tend to modify and manipulate the browser’s settings and performance for the purpose of aggressive online advertising. Programs like New Tab Review basically operate as marketing tools that popularize different sponsored sites, services, software, products, certain offers and others. They are programmed to redirect users and make them click on different links, ads, pop-ups, banners and new tabs in order to bring traffic and eventually make a sale. Such advertising software is a result of the hard work between programmers and advertisers, who are trying to create a legal and effective piece, which can promote different items on the Internet. The interested parties, of course, benefit from the promotional campaigns and the aggressive ads generation not only by gaining traffic and clicks but also by receiving revenue thanks to methods like Pay-Per-Click or Pay-Per-View. This is the reason why programs like this tend to literally flood the users with ads, which often stick to the screen and don’t want to get closed unless they receive a click.

We get asked this a lot, so we are putting it here: Removing parasite manually may take hours and damage your system in the process. We recommend downloading SpyHunter to see if it can detect parasite files for you.

Press CTRL + SHIFT + ESC at the same time and go to the Processes Tab (the “Details” Tab on Win 8 and 10). Try to determine which processes are dangerous.

Right click on each of them and select Open File Location. Then scan the files with our free online virus scanner:

Maximum file size: 128MB.

This scanner is free and will always remain free for our website's users. You can find its full-page version at:

After you open their folder, end the processes that are infected, then delete their folders.

Note: If you are sure something is part of the infection – delete it, even if the scanner doesn’t flag it. No anti-virus program can detect all infections.

Hold together the Start Key and R. Type appwiz.cpl –> OK.

You are now in the Control Panel. Look for suspicious entries. Uninstall it/them.

Type msconfig in the search field and hit enter. A window will pop-up:

Hold the Start Key and R –  copy + paste the following and click OK:

notepad %windir%/system32/Drivers/etc/hosts

A new file will open. If you are hacked, there will be a bunch of other IPs connected to you at the bottom. Look at the image below:

hosts_opt (1)

If there are suspicious IPs below “Localhost” – write to us in the comments.

Open the start menu and search for Network Connections (On Windows 10 you just write it after clicking the Windows button), press enter.

  1. Right-click on the Network Adapter you are using —> Properties —> Internet Protocol Version 4 (ICP/IP), click  Properties.
  2. The DNS line should be set to Obtain DNS server automatically. If it is not, set it yourself.
  3. Click on Advanced —> the DNS tab. Remove everything here (if there is something) —> OK.

  • After you complete this step, the threat will be gone from your browsers. Finish the next step as well or it may reappear on a system reboot.

Is New Tab Review somewhat close to a virus?

In the very begging of this article, we mentioned that browser hijackers, fortunately, are not virus-like pieces. They are legally developed programs, which do not intend to harass web users or cause system corruption. These activities are typical for malicious infections such as Ransomware, Trojan horses and Spyware viruses, which are not only illegal but also very destructive computer infections.

How may you catch a browser hijacker like New Tab Review?

You may end up with a program like New Tab Review on your PC in many ways. These pieces of software are distributed on the web for free and can be found in torrents, different spam messages, email with attachments, free download links, freeware or shareware sites. However, they do not “infect” you in a stealthy way like viruses do. Usually, you install them the very same way you install any other software, because they are often bundled inside the setup of different programs. Software developers commonly offer them as “suggested software” inside the installer and if you don’t pay close attention during the installation, you may allow them to become part of your system by default. This normally happens if you select the Automatic/ Quick installation option and click the “next” button without carefully reading what terms and conditions you agree on. All you need to do to prevent browser hijackers like New Tab Review is to carefully read the EULA of every new software that you run on your PC and select the Advanced/ Custom/ Manual installation options instead of the Automatic ones. This way, you will be given a menu where you can see and manually disable any “suggested software” from the given setup and install only the software you want.

How to remove New Tab Review and bring your browser settings back to normal?
