Niwm

Niwm is a dangerous computer threat that is classified as a variant of the Ransomware file-encrypting family of viruses. The main goal of Niwm is to make its victims’ files inaccessible which gives the hackers responsible for the attack blackmailing leverage.

The Niwm ransomware will leave a _readme.txt file with instructions

If you get your PC attacked by a Ransomware threat and, the chances of noticing the infection before all your files get locked-up by the Ransomware’s encryption aren’t good, which is why most people only come to learn about the virus attack once they realize they cannot open most or all of the files located on the infected computer. Alternatively, some people find out the malware attack when the virus generates a ransom note on their screens, in which the hackers provide instructions on how to “purchase” the decryption key for your files from them.

The Niwm virus

The Niwm virus is harmful Windows malware that belongs to the virus family known as Ransomware. The Niwm virus is known for encrypting the most important data of the user and keeping it under its lockdown until the victim decides to pay a ransom.

The Niwm virus will encrypt your files

After getting attacked by a virus like Niwm or Nifr, the main problem in front of you is the lack of surefire methods to recover the important files that the Ransomware has encryption-locked. If there aren’t any too valuable files in your computer that you can’t afford to lose or if you have a backup of said files, the only thing you must do is remove the infection which, in and of itself, is typically quite manageable. However, most of the people who have come to this post probably have had some quite important files locked by the Ransomware and lack any backups of those files. In such a case, we must make it clear that there can be no guarantees regarding the future of the encrypted data. We will try our best to give you guidance towards removing the virus and recovering as much data as possible, but we cannot promise anything.

The Niwm file decryption

The Niwm file decryption is a process that reverses the encryption applied by the virus and sets the locked-up files free. The Niwm file decryption is usually impossible without the corresponding key. However, there may be other methods to recover data encrypted by Ransomware.

As we said, file recovery is the trickiest part about dealing with a Ransomware. The payment of the ransom may sometimes seem like a needed compromise, but you must not forget that paying may sometimes not solve anything. Some Ransomware hackers don’t really keep their promises of restoring user files and simply keep the money their victims send them without giving anything in return. This is why the preferable way of approaching such a situation is by removing the malware and then opting for the alternative options that may get some of your data restored. We have included some instructions that focus on file recover and you can find them in the guide, but you must first rid your computer of the Ransomware so that this virus cannot do any more harm.

After you open their folder, end the processes that are infected, then delete their folders.

Note: If you are sure something is part of the infection – delete it, even if the scanner doesn’t flag it. No anti-virus program can detect all infections.

Hold the Start Key and R –  copy + paste the following and click OK:

    notepad %windir%/system32/Drivers/etc/hosts

A new file will open. If you are hacked, there will be a bunch of other IPs connected to you at the bottom. Look at the image below:

If there are suspicious IPs below “Localhost” – write to us in the comments.

Type msconfig in the search field and hit enter. A window will pop-up:

Go in Startup —> Uncheck entries that have “Unknown” as Manufacturer.

    1. %AppData%
    2. %LocalAppData%
    3. %ProgramData%
    4. %WinDir%

Delete everything in Temp. The rest just check out for anything recently added. Remember to leave us a comment if you run into any trouble!

    How to Decrypt Niwm files

We have a comprehensive (and daily updated) guide on how to decrypt your files. Check it out here.

Researchers in the field of data security have identified a new variant of ransomware that goes by the name STOP Djvu ransomware. The files encrypted by this threat are typically given the extension .Niwm added to the end of them. If you have been infected by this danger, it is possible that you may be able to recover your encrypted data by utilizing a decryptor like the one that can be found in the link below:

    https://www.emsisoft.com/ransomware-decryption-tools/stop-djvu

Before you can begin the process of decrypting the files, you will first need to download the STOPDjvu.exe application on your computer. After downloading the file, choose “Run as Administrator”, and then click the “Yes” button to continue. Be sure you have read and understood the terms of the license agreement, as well as any instructions that come with it. Keep in mind, however, that this tool is unable to decode data that has been encrypted with unknown offline keys or online encryption methods.

If you have trouble eliminating the Niwm ransomware, the anti-virus software that is available on our website may be of use to you. You may also manually scan any files that you think could be malicious by using our free online virus scanner.
