Faced with a Ransomware virus named .Nmcrypt that has locked a lot if not all of your personal data files and is currently demanding a payment to unlock them? If that is your current situation, we believe you should carefully read the following article because the information in it can help you determine how to handle this insidious malware threat as well as how to stay away from such malicious viruses in future. In the next lines you are about to learn about the most characteristic features of Ransomware viruses like .Nmcrypt, why this type of malware is so dangerous, how such infections get distributed and how you can effectively keep your machine protected against them in future. Also, we have made sure to provide our readers with a guide which contains instructions on how to manually eliminate the virus and have it removed from your PC. We have to note, however, that we can’t promise you that you’d be able to deal with all consequences of the infection caused by .Nmcrypt even if you complete the whole guide with all of its steps. It’s just that currently, there is no universal solution for fighting Ransomware and oftentimes handling such an infection really is a matter of luck and timing. With that said, we advise you to keep on reading especially if you have recently landed this noxious piece of malware.

Ransomware cryptoviruses

There are several different types of Ransomware viruses out there and before we go any further, we will give you a brief summary of their characteristics.

  • Screen-lockers – this is typically regarded as a less-advanced subcategory of Ransomware. Viruses of this type seek to lock the screen of your PC or your smartphone/tablet by generating a screen-wide banner/pop-up that doesn’t allow you to access the very interface of the device. Inside the said banner, there are instructions on how to carry out a ransom payment if you want the hacker to remove the banner and allow you to use your device. As we already mentioned, those viruses aren’t usually all that difficult to deal with as long as you know what you are doing (or have a guide to show you what needs to e done).
  • Encrypting Ransomware (cryptoviruses) – this is the most advanced type of Ransomware viruses and, unfortunately, .Nmcrypt belongs to this subcategory. The most typical traits of those viruses is that they use an advanced encryption algorithm to lock-up the personal files of the user whose PC has been infected. After the initial encryption is carried out, the hacker demands that a ransom is paid in exchange for a special key that can be used to unseal the encrypted data.
  • Leakware – a less commonly encountered form of Ransomware, Leakware viruses, instead of locking the user’s file, threaten their victim to make the personal data found on the infected PC public by uploading it to remote servers. Attacks from Leakware aren’t too common as this sort of malware is typically targeted at users who are likely to hold highly-sensitive data inside their devices. If you don’t have sensitive data inside your machine, the hacker would have no leverage upon which they’d be able to blackmail you for a ransom payment.

Reboot in Safe Mode (use this guide if you don’t know how to do it).

We get asked this a lot, so we are putting it here: Removing parasite manually may take hours and damage your system in the process. We recommend downloading SpyHunter to see if it can detect parasite files for you.

Press CTRL + SHIFT + ESC at the same time and go to the Processes Tab. Try to determine which processes are dangerous.

Right click on each of them and select Open File Location. Then scan the files with our free online virus scanner:

Drag and Drop Files Here to Scan
Maximum file size: 128MB.

This scanner is free and will always remain free for our website's users. You can find its full-page version at: https://howtoremove.guide/online-virus-scanner/

After you open their folder, end the processes that are infected, then delete their folders.

After you open their folder, end the processes that are infected, then delete their folders.

Note: If you are sure something is part of the infection – delete it, even if the scanner doesn’t flag it. No anti-virus program can detect all infections.

Hold the Start Key and R –  copy + paste the following and click OK:

notepad %windir%/system32/Drivers/etc/hosts

A new file will open. If you are hacked, there will be a bunch of other IPs connected to you at the bottom. Look at the image below:

hosts_opt (1)

If there are suspicious IPs below “Localhost” – write to us in the comments.

Type msconfig in the search field and hit enter. A window will pop-up:

Go in Startup —> Uncheck entries that have “Unknown” as Manufacturer.

  • Please note that ransomware may even include a fake Manufacturer name to its process. Make sure you check out every process here is legitimate.

To remove parasite on your own, you may have to meddle with system files and registries. If you were to do this, you need to be extremely careful, because you may damage your system.

If you want to avoid the risk, we recommend downloading SpyHunter
a professional malware removal tool.

  1. %AppData%
  2. %LocalAppData%
  3. %ProgramData%
  4. %WinDir%

How to Decrypt .Nmcrypt files

We have a comprehensive (and daily updated) guide on how to decrypt your files. Check it out here.

If the guide doesn’t help, download the anti-virus program we recommended or try our free online virus scanner. Also, you can always ask us in the comments for help!

As mentioned above, this subcategory of Ransomware is by far one of the worst virus threats that you can encounter. First of all, since the encryption process utilized by the virus is technically harmless to your system and files, even if you do have an antivirus program, there’s a high likelihood that it won’t be able to detect the virus due to the lack of any actual damage or corruption inside your system. Another problem with cryptoviruses like .Nmcrypt is that, even after the malware gets eliminated, the encryption would remain on the files and in many cases there is no effective method to unlock them. Within our guide, you can find a separate section that covers potential decryption and file-restoration methods and solutions but, as we stated in the beginning, we can give no guarantees regarding how successful they’d be in each separate instance of Ransomware infection. Still, we advise you to give our guide a try instead of directly making the payment to the hackers – know that paying the money also doesn’t guarantee that you’d get your files restored. After all, ask yourself whether or not a cyber-criminal who uses Ransomware is can be trusted.

Be careful when you go online and always have a backup!

Those are the two most important tips that we can give you with regards to keeping your data and system safe from any form of malware. Most users get their computers infected because they aren’t careful online. Do not be irresponsible when browsing the Internet – do not go to sites with questionable reliability and avoid opening any messages that look like spam. Also, clicking on random web ads is not the best of ideas as well so bear that in mind. A file backup is naturally one of the best precautions against viruses and especially against Ransomware so set up one if you haven’t already. And, last but not least, having a strong antivirus is still important because it can help you fend off other viruses as well as potential backdoor Trojans that can be used to covertly load Ransomware infections like .Nmcrypt inside your system.
