The good news is that this is not really the case, but it doesn’t make it any less disturbing. What we are facing here is an annoying ads-generating program from the browser hijacker family and on this page, you are going to learn what activities it could do while on your computer and are there any risks you should be concerned about. In case you feel heavily irritated by its behavior and the possibly undesired browsing disturbance that this program is exposing you to, at the end of this article you are going to find a removal guide that will help you successfully uninstall it from your system. You can also read about how to prevent such unwanted software from coming back to your PC again, so we suggest you read the following lines carefully and learn how to stay safe.

What is a browser hijacker?

You probably know that the web space is the perfect place to advertise. Especially now, in this age of technologies, where many businesses switch to digital solutions. They try to promote their products and services as much as possible and one of the tools that help them do that is the browser hijacker. This is a piece of software, which is specially developed to display a huge amount of advertisements, and it does it directly on the users’ screen. It can generate different types of ads, banners, pop-ups, boxes, links, notifications and all sorts of promotional messages. This is exactly what Optmz.Online is doing on your computer. However, its activity may often come with some browsing-related disturbance for the users. This application is often used to drag traffic to sponsored web pages, that’s why it may change your homepage or redirect your searches to the promoted websites and show you dozens of intrusive ads. Sometimes, you may really find it useful when the program displays ads and offers, which are related to your interests, but in most of the cases, it only causes a clutter on your screen and your browser.

The real benefit from the annoying browser hijacker’s activity goes to its developers, who earn from every click the sponsored ads receive. This is possible through a method called PPC (Pay-Per-Click) and they often use it as remuneration method that helps them distribute their own software for free while earning from the clicks of the ads. That’s why, if you often download and install free applications from the web, spam emails, open source download platforms and direct downloads or online installation managers, you are more likely to come across software bundles that contain ad-generating programs in the setup. If you are not careful during the installation process, especially if you skip the custom/advanced option in the setup, you will get them installed along with the software you desire and they will immediately start to bombard you with their ads.

Optmz.Online is not a virus, but this is what it could do:

Generally, browser hijackers like Optmz.Online are not considered a serious threat to your system and security. Unlike some other malicious threats like Ransomware, for example, such programs are incapable of performing harmful activities on your computer; therefore, there is no need to get panicked about them. However, there are some undesired consequences related to these programs, which cause you irritation and disturbance. Here are some of them:

  • Your start page and homepage may be replaced by an unfamiliar domain
  • The browser hijacker may take over your browsers like Chrome, Firefox, IE, Edge and others.
  • Your computer may get slow and high CPU usage may be registered due to the excessive amount of ads loaded.
  • It may block your search quires and cause random page redirects
  • Traffic data about your online activity may be collected and transmitted
  • In some rare cases a misleading ad or insecure web location that you get redirected to may lead to infection with viruses and different types of malware like Ransomware, Trojans, Spyware and more.
