A cryptovirus is a malicious program that belongs to the Ransomware category of PC viruses. You likely have already heard about Ransomware and how nasty those malware programs can be. Normally, such viruses are used for blackmailing and money extortion. The idea is that the computer of the user or the user’s personal data files would get locked by the Ransomware and the only way to regain access would be to pay a set amount of money to the hackers who have conducted the attack. There are several different forms of Ransomware viruses and the cryptoviruses are typically regarded as the nastiest one. The cryptoviruses use an advanced encryption algorithm through which they are able to block the access to the files of the targeted victim. After the encryption has been completed, the malware generates a special key that is then available only to the cyber-criminals who are in control of the virus. This key is typically the only reliable method of unlocking the files and the hackers claim that they’d be willing to send it to their victim if the demanded ransom payment gets carried out. Recently, yet another representative of this malware group has been released under the name of Princess Evolution and the number of its victims is only growing bigger and bigger with each day. It is, in fact, highly likely that a lot of the readers of this article have gotten on this page exactly because Princess Evolution has managed to infiltrate their computer systems and encrypt their private data files. If there are suspicious IPs below “Localhost” – write to us in the comments.

Type msconfig in the search field and hit enter. A window will pop-up:

How to Decrypt Princess Evolution files

We have a comprehensive (and daily updated) guide on how to decrypt your files. Check it out here.

If the guide doesn’t help, download the anti-virus program we recommended or try our free online virus scanner. Also, you can always ask us in the comments for help!

To pay or not to pay?

This is a common question among the victims of Ransomware cryptoviruses and it is important that we say a couple of words on that topic. Now, it might seem like an easy and quick solution to make the payment and get all this over with. However, can you really be certain that sending the requested money would actually yield the needed results, namely getting your data back? Well, in many instances the hackers do indeed send the decryption key to their victims upon the execution of the payment but, unfortunately, this isn’t always the case. There’s a high chance that things might go the other way around meaning that you might lose your money without the cyber-criminals actually providing you with the means to make your files accessible again. Therefore, we typically advise our readers to abstain from taking this course of action and instead look for some alternative options. But what alternatives are there? Well, sadly, there aren’t many other variants. However, we have tried to put together the most useful and potentially helpful ones within a separate section in our guide that we advise you to check out. Follow the instructions there and see if you are lucky enough to get your data back using the methods from our guide. Know that we can’t guarantee full success but it’s still much better to try our suggestions as opposed to risking your money for a decryption key that might never get sent to you.

More advice on Ransomware

To keep your system protected against future infections by viruses like Princess Evolution, we strongly recommend you stay away from any potential malware sources when you’re on the Internet. For instance, do not use illegal software download platforms that distributed pirated content and do not go to sites that look suspicious and unreliable. Also, abstain from interacting with online content that doesn’t seem safe such as spam letters, fishy-looking web ads, online offers that seem too good to be true and other similar elements. Getting a file backup for your important data is another great piece of advice so make sure you remember it and implement it. In case you encounter another Ransomware in future, know that there would probably be no visible symptoms aside from increased RAM and CPU use so you really need to be very vigilant if you are to spot the threat on time. An antivirus might be helpful but bear in mind that since the encryption that viruses like Princess Evolution use doesn’t really cause any actual harm to the system or to the data on your machine, even a strong security program might sometimes fail to intercept a Ransomware cryptovirus. Therefore, it’s always best if you simple make sure to stay away from anything that can infect your PC with malware so that you don’t need to deal with the consequences if a potential cryptovirus attack.
