The removal guide at the bottom will help you do just that, but we strongly implore you to take the time necessary and read this article in full. Learning a little about how Ads By Dotdo and other adware operates can save you much hassle in the future.

Ads By Dotdo – a short overview

Ads By Dotdo belongs to a wide family of viruses dubbed Adware. After installation Ads By Dotdo attaches itself to your internet browser and begins generating advertisements. Besides the traditional offers these may include also:

  • Prompts to download program updates
  • Warning messages about installing missing plug-ins
  • Requests to install a specific video player to view something
  • Offers for free software (often anti-malware scanners)

REMEMBER! Things that originate from Ads By Dotdo are never useful and always share one of the following goals:

  1. Trick you into spending money
  2. Install malware on your computer
  3. Just waste your time

The advertisements themselves are rarely even real – they are in fact generated by Ads By Dotdo on your own CPU. If your PC has been performing poorly lately the blame likely falls on Ads By Dotdo draining resources. Its likely the virus also reads yours browsing and search history to analyze and target your interests with its ads.

But how did Ads By Dotdo land on my computer?

The answer is not a pleasant one – you likely installed it yourself. Adware like Ads By Dotdo rarely targets system vulnerabilities – it will rather try to somehow get an unsuspecting user to allow its installation. However, there is a positive side to this too – users familiar with the most common tricks are much harder to beguile in the future. Familiarize yourself with some adware used methods below:

  1. Infected download/torrent sites – such sites are not real and have no real content, but merely copy other sites. They have an algorithm that copies whatever you search for and generates a temporary download file with the exact same name. This triggers a 100% match by the search engines and these sites may pop very high – first or second page. The best way to spot them is to look for the extension carried by the file offered for download. Viruses will end in .exe or come as an archive, which has the .exe inside. NEVER install .exe files unless you are certain they are the real thing – if possible always download from the original developer/owner.
  2. Installers with bundled goods – usually when you download and install a program it will try to suggest or outright install other programs. Sometimes these other programs will be adware. This is especially true with free software. To avoid installing the adware always go with the advanced installation option. Clicking next several times will net you with the same installation as the default option, but you should read the options and deny access to all extra programs you don’t need or find suspicious.

This is perhaps the most important and difficult step, so be extremely careful. Open the Task Manager by right clicking on the Taskbar and choosing Start Task Manager.

Once it opens, choose the Processes Tab. Look at all of the processes in front of you and try to determine which ones are a virus. Google them or ask us in the comments and we will provide the best assistance we can. If the virus returns later on after you supposedly removed it, the reason is that you missed something here.

Right click on each of the virus processes separately and select Open File Location. Also, End the process after you open the folder. Just to make sure we don’t delete any programs you mistakenly took for a virus, copy the folders somewhere, then delete the directories you were sent to.
