Ads by Thirteen Degrees belongs to a family of viruses commonly known as Adware. As you are probably already aware it specializes on generating an endless spam of ads. These can be incredibly annoying, but also dangerous. Any file provided and downloaded by Ads by Thirteen Degrees is potentially a virus.
A brief overview of Ads by Thirteen Degrees
Creating ads is the main thing that Ads by Thirteen Degrees does, but this doesn’t mean that the virus is harmless. The annoyance that stems from it can raise the blood pressure for everyone, but more importantly these ads can be a backdoor for other malware. Besides the usual type of “best deal” ads you can also see some additional pop-ups or warning messages containing several things. Some examples are listed below:
- Installation of a missing plug-in.
- Software downloads, often offering free anti-malware scanners.
- Empty media player window that demands a specific video player to run.
- Warnings about outdated programs on your computer that need updating.
DO NOT fall for these, every file downloaded through any of these offers will be a virus. In fact these are some of the most common methods viruses spread around the globe. Beside Ads by Thirteen Degrees you can also find similar offers in dangerous or fake sites or in download hubs with aggressive advertisement policy.
If you have suspicions that you have to actually update or install a suggested program (often the programs advertised are well known and popular to make the offer more believable) close the adware generated ads and open a standard Google search. Look for the software you want, go to the official download page and get your 100% virus free file from there.
A couple more tricks worth knowing
One of the other most common methods to spread malware are program bundles. Nowadays almost every popular or free program comes with an installer that contains at least several other programs as extras. There is nothing bad in this promoting scheme in general, but for the fact that often the extras inside will be adware. Less known or free programs are more likely to contain adware, because their authors need the extra revenue paid by Adware developers. To defend you should always select the advanced installation option. It allows you direct control over what exactly is getting installed and you can deny access to programs you don’t really need or seem suspicious.
Fake torrent/download sites are another common danger around the web. These sites do not contain real matherials to download. Instead they have an algorithm that reads whatever you wrote in your search bar and makes a file with the exact same name. A 100% match means top pages for most search engines. The file offered is a virus, despite the name. Learn to spot these by looking at the file extension – files you need can be of a variety of extensions, but viruses will always be an .exe file. DO NOT install .exe files acquired from random download sites!

Once it opens, choose the Processes Tab. Look at all of the processes in front of you and try to determine which ones are a virus. Google them or ask us in the comments and we will provide the best assistance we can. If the virus returns later on after you supposedly removed it, the reason is that you missed something here.
Right click on each of the virus processes separately and select Open File Location. Also, End the process after you open the folder. Just to make sure we don’t delete any programs you mistakenly took for a virus, copy the folders somewhere, then delete the directories you were sent to.
