This page aims to help you remove GandCrab v5.0.3 Ransomware for free. Our instructions also cover how any GandCrab v5.0.3 file can be recovered.

In case you have recently noticed that your computer is not working properly and your most needed files have become inaccessible, the chances are that you might have been infected with a Ransomware infection like GandCrab v5.0.3. This type of malware causes harm in a very unusual way and instead of corrupting your data or destroying your OS, it actually places a special file-encryption to your personal files (audios, videos, documents, images, etc.) and locks them in such a way that you’d be unable to modify or use them. Many users don’t know how to remove this nasty infection from their computers and what the best way to easily get rid of the ransom-demanding virus in such a way that their files remain undamaged is. And this is not surprising because the Ransomware infections have been created mainly to intimidate the users and take their money. GandCrab v5.0.3, for instance, locks your files and demands a ransom to be paid in exchange for a decryption key that can unlock them. If you don’t know what to do in such a situation, here are some options that you should consider when you are deciding how to deal with the infection:

Remove the infection – A very important step before you move to any attempts to recover your files is to find and remove the Ransomware virus from the computer. You can try to do that with the help of the removal guide below, which contains manual step-by-step instructions. Keep in mind, though, that a threat such as GandCrab v5.0.3 can be very sneaky and that’s why, for extra safety, we highly recommend that you also scan your machine with a professional malware-removal tool of your choice, like the one suggested on this page. If you need more help with removing the virus, it is a good idea to invest in the purchase of reliable Ransomware-removal software, as this is the best way to ensure that your PC is clean and safe.

Press CTRL + SHIFT + ESC at the same time and go to the Processes Tab. Try to determine which processes are dangerous.

Right click on each of them and select Open File Location. Then scan the files with our free online virus scanner:

Note: If you are sure something is part of the infection – delete it, even if the scanner doesn’t flag it. No anti-virus program can detect all infections.

Hold the Start Key and R –  copy + paste the following and click OK:

notepad %windir%/system32/Drivers/etc/hosts

A new file will open. If you are hacked, there will be a bunch of other IPs connected to you at the bottom. Look at the image below:

hosts_opt (1)

If there are suspicious IPs below “Localhost” – write to us in the comments.

Type msconfig in the search field and hit enter. A window will pop-up:

Go in Startup —> Uncheck entries that have “Unknown” as Manufacturer.

  • Please note that ransomware may even include a fake Manufacturer name to its process. Make sure you check out every process here is legitimate.

How to Decrypt GandCrab v5.0.3 files

We have a comprehensive (and daily updated) guide on how to decrypt your files. Check it out here.

Don’t get scared and avoid panic – Once GandCrab v5.0.3 has been removed from the system, a smart thing to do is to completely check your computer for any non-encrypted files and if you find some, quickly copy them somewhere on a clean USB drive.

Use Backup copies – You can “bypass” the ransom payment and restore your files via backup copies if you have any.

Check for data-recovery tools – In case you don’t have a backup of your files, you can seek online some good data-recovery tools and try to minimize the data loss with their help. A list of such tools can be found in our How to Decrypt Ransomware article.

Pay the ransom (only in critical situations) – If nothing works and you really have no other option, you can risk your money and hope that the hackers will send you a decryption key. This is the least advisable option, though, because you have no guarantee that the crooks will keep their promise and yet the money you send will be lost forever no matter what.

Reinstall your Operating System – The last option is to reinstall your OS as this will completely remove all your data as well as the infection. With this action, you will get a completely new infection free computer but if you have no backup copies of your files, this may not be a good option as your files will be gone as well.

Sadly, as you can see, dealing with such a stealthy threat like GandCrab v5.0.3 is not an easy task and many of the methods that you may try may not be enough to fully recover your PC and save your files. That’s why you should carefully consider your options and the possible risks and choose the option that you think is the most sensible in your situation.
