Trojans are the most notorious malware group in existence. Even if you couldn’t name any other virus or are as far away from computing as can be, the term Trojan horse virus will certainly ring a bell, and that’s not just because of the old story. Either way, Trojans are this popular with very good reason. For one, they are known to be extremely dangerous and they’re also very numerous. A whopping 75% or more of all malware infections is caused by Trojans alone, so that should speak volumes of their distribution rate. One of the latest variants of this type is a Trojan called Scgeneric4.bpwa, which has recently started infecting large numbers of users. That is also precisely why we have created the current article and are looking to inform our readers about this horrible threat. If you are among the victims of this virus and have found that it is nestled in your PC system, then you should especially stick around to find out about what this malware piece might be up to. In addition, we will also provide you with a detailed removal guide at the bottom of this article, so you can deal with the infection yourself.

What do Trojans do?

Trojans are uniquely flexible in the tasks they are capable of performing, which sets them aside from the majority of other malware types. That’s also one of the reasons they are so popular with hackers and cybercriminals. We will give you an example of the different types of activities Scgeneric4.bpwa or other Trojans could be engaging whilst on your PC, depending on what the hackers behind them have set them to accomplish.

  • Destroying valuable information on your computer. Trojans can easily delete selected files from your PC, for whatever reason that is, or they may simply format all your disks and drives, wiping them clean of any information whatsoever. Not to mention that a Trojan like this can simply just make your computer completely unusable.

Press CTRL + SHIFT + ESC at the same time and go to the Processes Tab. Try to determine which processes are dangerous.

Right click on each of them and select Open File Location. Then scan the files with our free online virus scanner:

This scanner is free and will always remain free for our website's users. You can find its full-page version at:

After you open their folder, end the processes that are infected, then delete their folders.

Note: If you are sure something is part of the infection – delete it, even if the scanner doesn’t flag it. No anti-virus program can detect all infections.

Hold together the Start Key and R. Type appwiz.cpl –> OK.

You are now in the Control Panel. Look for suspicious entries. Uninstall it/them. If you see a screen like this when you click Uninstall, choose NO:

Type msconfig in the search field and hit enter. A window will pop-up:

Startup —> Uncheck entries that have “Unknown” as Manufacturer or otherwise look suspicious.

  • Remember this step – if you have reason to believe a bigger threat (like ransomware) is on your PC, check everything here.

Hold the Start Key and R –  copy + paste the following and click OK:

notepad %windir%/system32/Drivers/etc/hosts

A new file will open. If you are hacked, there will be a bunch of other IPs connected to you at the bottom. Look at the image below:

If there are suspicious IPs below “Localhost” – write to us in the comments.

  • One of the most common usages for Trojans like Scgeneric4.bpwa is theft. The virus could be after sensitive information, financial details, etc. and can use different means to gain access to that data. For example, it could use a method called keystroke logging to copy all of the data you input using your keyboard. That way it could potentially get hold of your login details for social media accounts, online banking, and who knows what else. Not to mention even more sophisticated means of data theft such as redirecting your entire traffic to the hackers’ servers, making everything you see and do – their domain.
  • A no less frightening usage of this type of malware is spying on its victims. Again, the above methods can be employed for that purpose, as well as tapping into your webcam and mic, monitoring your screen, etc.
  • Your computer could be involved in a botnet and used to deliver spam or infect other computers within its network with this or other malware. As a matter of fact, Trojans can often be used as a way to introduce other malware to victim computer, most commonly ransomware. Alternatively, your PC’s resources could be used to mine cryptocurrencies and send them to the hackers.

As you can see, the things Scgeneric4.bpwa can be up to on your computer are so many and so diverse, and the list just goes on and on. So, without a doubt it’s best to see to its removal as soon as possible. You can do that with the help of our guide below, or if you’d much rather trust a professional removal tool instead, we have that at your disposal as well. But once you’ve dealt with this Trojan, it’s important that you start taking your system’s safety more seriously from now on and do all that’s in your power to prevent future infections.
