There is a removal guide below, which contains step-by-step instructions as well as some very useful tips on protection and prevention, so take a look and spend a few minutes to read them.

A few things you should know about Trojans

In this digital world, a Trojan horse is a program with malicious coding, which can hide inside any type of harmless looking piece of content or software. Generally, what is typical for the Trojans is that they can be very creative in camouflaging themselves and secretly infecting the computer without any visible symptoms. Usually, hackers, who create such malware, spread it with the help of various malicious transmitters such as .exe installations, email files, different free installers, setups, apps, ads, misleading links or infected web pages. Pieces like Shadowpad Malware, for instance, are commonly camouflaged as attractive images, files, spam messages, ads and pop-ups, which can easily delude the normal web users and trick them into clicking on them without even suspecting what a threat can be hidden inside. By clicking on the infected transmitter, they may unknowingly install the malware, which will start to operate on their PC, gain control over their system, steal some sensitive information or perform some other type of damage that it has been programmed for.

We get asked this a lot, so we are putting it here: Removing parasite manually may take hours and damage your system in the process. We recommend downloading SpyHunter to see if it can detect parasite files for you.

Press CTRL + SHIFT + ESC at the same time and go to the Processes Tab. Try to determine which processes are dangerous.

Right click on each of them and select Open File Location. Then scan the files with our free online virus scanner:

Drag and Drop Files Here to Scan
Maximum file size: 128MB.

This scanner is free and will always remain free for our website's users. You can find its full-page version at:

Scan Results

After you open their folder, end the processes that are infected, then delete their folders.

Note: If you are sure something is part of the infection – delete it, even if the scanner doesn’t flag it. No anti-virus program can detect all infections.

Hold together the Start Key and R. Type appwiz.cpl –> OK.

You are now in the Control Panel. Look for suspicious entries. Uninstall it/them. If you see a screen like this when you click Uninstall, choose NO:

Type msconfig in the search field and hit enter. A window will pop-up:

Startup —> Uncheck entries that have “Unknown” as Manufacturer or otherwise look suspicious.

  • Remember this step – if you have reason to believe a bigger threat (like ransomware) is on your PC, check everything here.

Hold the Start Key and R –  copy + paste the following and click OK:

notepad %windir%/system32/Drivers/etc/hosts

A new file will open. If you are hacked, there will be a bunch of other IPs connected to you at the bottom. Look at the image below:

hosts_opt (1)

If there are suspicious IPs below “Localhost” – write to us in the comments.

To remove parasite on your own, you may have to meddle with system files and registries. If you were to do this, you need to be extremely careful, because you may damage your system.

If you want to avoid the risk, we recommend downloading SpyHunter
a professional malware removal tool.

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER—-Software—Microsoft—-Windows—CurrentVersion—Run– Random
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER—-Software—Microsoft—Internet Explorer—-Main—- Random

What harm may Shadowpad Backdoor cause?

Generally, you can never be sure of the kind of damage a Trojan horse can cause because the hackers can program it to perform almost anything. From establishing remote control over the infected machine, creating a backdoor for other types of malware (viruses, other Trojans, Ransomware, etc.), and stalking you to even more malicious deeds like system destruction, credential theft, and blackmail. Basically, a script like Shadowpad Backdoor can allow the hackers to control your PC entirely and do with it as they please. What is really nasty is that the malware can run secretly and sometimes even your antivirus may fail to detect it. Some threats from the Trojan type may also install different forms of spyware such as key loggers, which can record all of your keyboard activity, collect personal information and transmit it back to its criminal developers. Other types of Trojans may install botnet software on your machine and link it to other botnets, which are secretly controlled by criminals. Such botnets can be used for different purposes, the most common of which are related to the distribution of denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks, launching of jam websites, cracking of encrypted passwords or spreading out spam and viruses. The worst is that all this can happen without the user’s knowledge.

How can you get infected with Shadowpad Backdoor?

The most common way to catch a Trojan like Shadowpad Backdoor is to unknowingly click on a malicious transmitter. This malware may also get installed on the users’ system via “drive-by downloads” where the cybercriminals usually change an unsuspected Web page’s code and insert their harmful script. Another way to end up with a Trojan is when downloading some sketchy content, torrents or software installers from non-reputed sources and software developers.

Reducing the chances of catching an infection like Shadowpad Backdoor is not that difficult as long as you follow some basic safety rules. One of the first things you should do is to protect your system with reliable antivirus software and turn your firewall on. This may prevent malware from getting automatically installed on your PC or at least may notify you if some program is trying to do so. Also, ensure your software is regularly updated and you have provided it with all the security patches. Of course, it is needless to say that you should stay away from unknown websites, sketchy ads, pop-ups and other suspicious pieces of content, pirated materials and unfamiliar web locations. All this may help keep malware away, but once the Trojan gets through, you need to immediately remove it. Below, we have published a detailed guide on how to remove Shadowpad Backdoor, so, don’t hesitate to use it and get rid of this nasty infection.
