Startnewtab is a source of some very annoying browser changes related to page redirects, homepage or search engine replacements, and tons of ads, pop-ups and banners on your screen. The main topic of our article today is how to remove it, and on this page you are going to find a detailed removal guide that will help you do so. If your favorite Chrome, Firefox, Edge, or other default browser that you are using has been taken over by Startnewtab, then here you will learn how dangerous this program can be, what are its specifics and typical distribution methods, as well as some good tips on how to keep it away from your PC in the future.
What kind of a program is Startnewtab and what purpose does it serve?
Startnewtab is a browser hijacker – a specific type of software, used to display different sponsored advertisements on your screen. It does that by basically “hijacking” your browser and imposing some changes to your browser settings, which ensure that you will be exposed to as many promotional messages and advertising web pages as possible. A browser hijacker like Startnewtab may often redirect you to specific sites, services or products, and the main goal of all this activity is to make you click on them. Why? Because most of the ads and sites that you see are usually sponsored to get clicks and visits and every time you click on them, the people, who own the browser hijacker make money out of your clicks. This is the so-called Pay-Per-Click scheme – a very popular, but still a very aggressive advertising model, which many online based businesses and software developers use to gain some profits from sponsored advertisements. Basically, the purposes that programs like Startnewtab serve are marketing-oriented. However, the browsing disturbance that they may cause to users may be a reason for some of them to wish to remove the browser hijackers from their computers.
Is a browser hijacker a security threat to your PC?
Generally, browser hijackers can’t be classified as dangerous software. They do not contain malicious scripts and their main purpose is not to harm your system. Unlike viruses or some other harmful online threats such as Ransomware or Trojans, a program like Startnewtab would be quite harmless. It may mess up with your browser settings, it may flood your screen with ads and redirect your searches, but it won’t initiate any malicious activity on your system. That’s why, most of the security experts don’t consider it a security threat from the rank of viruses and malware.
However, despite not being malicious, a browser hijacker may perform some potentially unwanted activities, which may have an unpleasant effect to your browser and your system’s overall performance. One of the rather undesired side effects of keeping a program like Startnewtab on your machine could be the significant browsing slowdown that you may experience. When busy with loading ads, pop-ups, and different promotional messages, your browser may become unresponsive for your searches and it may take ages to load the pages you want. This may cause some serious irritation, not to mention that there is always a risk of bumping into some misleading ad or a link that may contain some viruses or even worse malicious threats like Ransomware or Trojans. Another rather questionable activity is that of data tracking. Startnewtab is capable of monitoring your browsing history, your latest webpage visits, your bookmarks, likes, and shares. This is something, which may be considered as a privacy invasion by some users, and could be a good reason for them to decide to uninstall the intrusive browser hijacker from their system.
How can you remove Startnewtab and get rid of its annoying ads?
Dealing with a browser hijacker is not rocket science, however, it has its own specifics. Usually, such software gets inside the machine thanks to a program bundle of some other attractive or free program that the users download and install. It could be found mostly on some freeware platforms, torrent sites, spam emails, installation managers, direct downloads from the web, or sketchy web locations. The installation normally happens when the users overlook options like the “Advanced” or “Custom” one and directly install the whole bundle as it is, using the “Standard” installation option. This is how they end up with potentially unwanted software on their computers, without being notified about it. The good thing is that the removal guide below contains some detailed instructions, which can help even a non-professional to effectively uninstall the browser hijacker and remove all of its traces from the computer. So if you closely follow them, you will surely have no issues to get rid of Startnewtab in just a few clicks.
