The capabilities of Trojan horse viruses and how they travel

Even though Trojans are easily the most infamous malware category, what they actually do is still a mystery for most users. And there’s a reason for that, too. That reason is that Trojans like Upup.exe are incredibly versatile when it comes to the type of malicious actions they can execute. And do you know why they are called Trojan horses to begin with? Because, much like the fabled wooden horse, they enter your system posing as something completely benign. And then the threat strikes you from within, as the hackers can remotely tell it what to do already after it has planted itself deep into your computer’s system. That’s why we cannot exactly tell you what kind of mischief Upup.exe may be up to on your PC, or how long it’s been there. But we can list some of the most common usages, so you will get an idea of the diversity of malicious tasks this virus is capable of performing.

Reboot in Safe Mode (use this guide if you don’t know how to do it).

After you open their folder, end the processes that are infected, then delete their folders.

Note: If you are sure something is part of the infection – delete it, even if the scanner doesn’t flag it. No anti-virus program can detect all infections.

Hold together the Start Key and R. Type appwiz.cpl –> OK.

You are now in the Control Panel. Look for suspicious entries. Uninstall it/them. If you see a screen like this when you click Uninstall, choose NO:

Type msconfig in the search field and hit enter. A window will pop-up:

Startup —> Uncheck entries that have “Unknown” as Manufacturer or otherwise look suspicious.

  • Remember this step – if you have reason to believe a bigger threat (like ransomware) is on your PC, check everything here.

Hold the Start Key and R –  copy + paste the following and click OK:

notepad %windir%/system32/Drivers/etc/hosts

A new file will open. If you are hacked, there will be a bunch of other IPs connected to you at the bottom. Look at the image below:

hosts_opt (1)

If there are suspicious IPs below “Localhost” – write to us in the comments.

Type Regedit in the windows search field and press Enter.

Once inside, press CTRL and F together and type the virus’s Name. Right click and delete any entries you find with a similar name. If they don’t show up this way, go manually to these directories and delete/uninstall them:

  • HKEY_CURRENT_USER—-Software—–Random Directory. It could be any one of them – ask us if you can’t discern which ones are malicious.
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER—-Software—Microsoft—-Windows—CurrentVersion—Run– Random
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER—-Software—Microsoft—Internet Explorer—-Main—- Random

One is theft, and this is perhaps the most common purpose for Trojans. They can be used to steal sensitive information, such as personal details or account login credentials, passwords, financial details, etc. There’s very little that a Trojan horse virus wouldn’t be able to get a hold of whilst on your computer if it really wanted to. This information is then in turn transferred to the hackers behind the virus and they can use it as they please: to impersonate you or use your identity for their gain; to steal your money or exploit your information for other criminal purposes.

Besides that, a Trojan horse like Upup.exe can also just as easily be used to exploit your computer’s resources. For example, it could be secretly mining cryptocurrencies on your machine and sending them back to the hackers. Or it could have turned your PC into a bot with the intention of sending out spam or infecting other computers with malware. Alternatively, the Trojan could be set to spy on you – literally. It could be tapping into your webcam and/or microphone, as well as monitoring your keystrokes. Similarly to stealing, the virus can employ a variety of techniques to keep tabs on you and this may potentially lead to far more serious violations.

The above is only a very small portion of the potential damage you can expect Upup.exe to cause. So, it’s best not to wait and remove it as quickly as possible. It would also be a good idea to learn how to prevent such infections before they happen. One way is to upgrade to a better antivirus program and keep it up to date with all the latest virus definitions. In addition, it’s also very important that you keep your system up-to-date. This will make it less vulnerable to external threats, whereas an outdated OS is an easy target for a Trojan like Upup.exe. In addition, just practice safe browsing and avoid potential malware sources, such as illegal download platforms, spam messages, online ads, etc.
