This page aims to help you remove Wannasmile Ransomware for free. Our instructions also cover how any Wannasmile file can be recovered.

The article that you are about to read contains some helpful information about the characteristics and the harmful effects of Wannasmile – a Ransomware cryptovirus, specialized in file encryption. Generally, Ransomware is a type of malware, which has recently gained popularity within cyber criminal circles with its blackmail scheme and devastating effects on the encrypted data. The moment such malware compromises your system, an immediate file encryption takes place on all the data found on the drives and a ransom message asks you to pay ransom in exchange for reversing the malicious encryption. Wannasmile Ransomware, in particular, operates exactly the same way. It has the ability to turn your images, work files, archives, documents, audio and video files, etc. into a completely unusable piece of data by using secret cryptography. Then, the infection places a ransom message and asks you to act fast and pay a certain amount of money (usually requested in Bitcoins) in exchange for a decryption key. More details about the harmful effects of this malware and the possible methods to deal with it are shared in the next paragraphs.

Getting a better understanding about Ransomware

Ransomware is a malicious group of software, which shares the same behavioral traits. Security experts recognize basically two types of Ransomware, based on the devices it targets. You may come across any of them while browsing the web, so let us give you more details on what they are about:

  • Ransomware which targets mobile devices – Tablets and smartphones are popular devices. With many features, most of which are connected to the Internet, they are a perfect target for online threats such as Ransomware. The way this malware can affect them is to block your access to their screen and icons by placing a huge on-screen ransom message. In order to remove the nasty message and access your screen, you need to pay ransom to the hackers.
  • Ransomware which attacks desktop computers and laptops – This type of Ransomware is much more aggressive and Wannasmile falls into its category. Apart from blocking your access to the entire computer desktop, this threat may secretly apply an encryption to the files found on the hard drives. You cannot open or use any of your documents, images, videos, audio, or work files unless you pay ransom to the crooks. If you fulfill their demands, they usually promise to send you a decryption key, but whether they will really do that or not and how successful that key will work, nobody can tell you.

If there are suspicious IPs below “Localhost” – write to us in the comments.

Type msconfig in the search field and hit enter. A window will pop-up:

Go in Startup —> Uncheck entries that have “Unknown” as Manufacturer.

  • Please note that ransomware may even include a fake Manufacturer name to its process. Make sure you check out every process here is legitimate.

Step4

WARNING!
To remove parasite, you may have to meddle with system files and registries. Making a mistake and deleting the wrong thing may damage your system.

How can Wannasmile Ransomware get inside your computer?

A lot of distribution and infection methods that effectively spread Ransomware are known to security experts. However, the cyber criminals often get very creative and they use new and even trickier methods to insert threats like this inside the users’ machines. Here are some of the most common ways to end up with Ransomware according to recent studies:

  • Opening spam emails or downloading their suspicious attachments: A very common and also very effective way for Ransomware distribution is to get it delivered in the form of an email attachment, a link, an ad or some .zip file which looks attractive. In most of the cases, such emails contain well-camouflaged Trojan horse infections, which come in a combo with a cryptovirus like Wannasmile.
  • Clicking on fake update notifications or software downloads: Very often, the hackers use fake software update requests of some well-known programs, which the users recognize and trust. This way, when a pop-up notification suddenly prompts them to allow the update of Java, Adobe or a Windows update, the users click on it without questioning its legitimacy. Unfortunately, once you click on such a fake request, your PC may get contaminated without you even knowing it.
  • Interacting with sketchy web locations, torrents, free installers, and freeware or shareware platforms. Everyone likes free stuff, but platforms where free content (or pirate content) is distributed are the ideal place for threats like Ransomware to lurk. For this reason, we advise you to never download and install software from non-reputed developers and to always stick to familiar and reputed sites.

How to remove Wannasmile?

Being infected with Ransomware like Wannasmile can be a really dreadful experience. You may not be able to fully recover from such an attack and you should know that nothing can guarantee the decryption of your files. The only safe option that you have is to use your file backups. Of course, you can also contact a specialist, which is far wiser than paying ransom to the criminals. In all cases, we advise you to remove Wannasmile as soon as possible because the longer you keep the Ransomware on your system, the more you are exposed to risk. For assistance in the detection and the elimination process, we suggest you carefully look at the instructions in the Removal guide below. Also, it is a good idea to scan your PC with the professional removal tool to ensure no hidden scripts have remained somewhere in the system.
