Aggressive online advertising

A browser hijacker is a type of software which is dedicated to one purpose – to advertise. Every activity that such a piece of software could perform comes down to that one purpose and there is a strong reason for that. Basically, each click on a pop-up, banner or page-redirecting link that the user makes brings revenue to the hijacker’s creators in the form of a Pay-Per-Click or Pay-Per-View payments while at the same time it also generates traffic and exposure to the products, services and items, displayed on the screen. Both, the creators of applications like “Your mac is infected with 3 viruses” and the people whose products are getting promoted benefit from this activity as each of them achieves their goal. The first ones earn money from the clicks on the displayed ads and the latter place their advertisements directly on the users’ screen and get them redirected to their web pages. The changes in the browser’s search engine, the homepage and the new tab pages are just part of the advertising strategy. Hardly any of all these activities, however, would actually benefit you as a user. Not only may you have to face the imposed changes of your browser settings, but you may also have to deal with the modified search results, the page-redirects and the hard-to-remove ads every time you try to surf the web through the affected browser.

Other possible issues you may face may include browser unresponsiveness, sluggishness, screen-freezing and even some sudden crashes, typically caused by the excessive amount of ads which the hijacker tries to push on your screen. Applications like “Your mac is infected with 3 viruses” may also launch a data-tracking activity in the background with the purpose of monitoring your recent searches, most visited pages, liked content, bookmarks and shares. Fortunately, the purpose of this data-collection isn’t to have your data encrypted or stolen (which would be the case if you are infected with a Ransomware or a Trojan virus) but to provide the advertisers with a better understanding of your interests so that they can optimize the advertising content according to your searches. This practice is generally not considered to be illegal but it might be seen as a privacy invasion as well as a yet another good reason to have the browser hijacker uninstalled.
