Tohj

Tohj is an online hazard that belongs to the notorious ransomware category and is used for blackmail purposes. The complex encryption that Tohj uses and the unique extension it typically applies to the files it encrypts distinguish it from the other infections of this type and make it a serious threat to any digital data.

Many web users have recently come to look for assistance in removing the malware from their machines, as the infections with this new ransomware virus are becoming more frequent. If you landed on this page seeking the same, we won’t disappoint you and will provide you with valuable information about the nature of this infection and a free removal guide that contains instructions on how to remove Tohj from your computer.

ransomware viruses like Tohj, .Adww and Adlg follow identical approaches to achieve their objectives. For the first stage of their attack, they normally search the system’s hard disk to locate files that the victim uses the most. These files can be text documents, different data archives or databases, audio and video files, images, as well as system files. As soon as these files are detected, the ransomware produces an encrypted copy of each and every one of them. The original files are then removed and only the encrypted copies remain in the system. The final stage of the infection is when a pop-up notification appears on the victim’s screen. This notification typically contains a threatening message from the hackers who want a ransom to be paid for the recovery of the encrypted files.

The Tohj virus

The Tohj virus is a ransomware infection that extorts money from its victims by locking their files with encryption and asking a ransom for the decryption key. The Tohj virus spreads mostly in spam messages, malicious email attachments, attractive-looking fake ads and cracked software installers.

One of the worst aspects about being infected with ransomware is that your security software may not alert you about the file-encryption process and you may not have the chance to stop the attack on time. The reason is, file encryption is a commonly used data protection method that is used to limit unauthorized access to specific digital information and allows only the person who has the matching decryption key to unlock it. In general, the file encryption causes no file corruption or any system damage that can trigger the virus definitions of your security program. Thus, you won’t be notified when it runs and the antivirus program won’t do anything to stop it.

The Tohj file extension

The Tohj file extension is a special suffix that is added to the name of the files that are encrypted by the ransomware. If you detect the Tohj file extension on any of your files, it is advisable that you immediately turn off your computer and seek professional assistance.

Tohj File

If this malicious software has attacked your computer, you might be thinking about paying the required ransom. But note that you’re probably going to lose your money if you make the payment, and there is no guarantee that you will receive a decryption key from the crooks. That’s why our suggestion is to hold onto your money and check out the removal guide below in order to find out what the methods to remove Tohj are and how you may recover some of your files for free.

Right click on each of them and select Open File Location. Then scan the files with our free online virus scanner:

Each file will be scanned with up to 64 antivirus programs to ensure maximum accuracy
This scanner is free and will always remain free for our website's users.
This file is not matched with any known malware in the database. You can either do a full real-time scan of the file or skip it to upload a new file. Doing a full scan with 64 antivirus programs can take up to 3-4 minutes per file.

After you open their folder, end the processes that are infected, then delete their folders.

Note: If you are sure something is part of the infection – delete it, even if the scanner doesn’t flag it. No anti-virus program can detect all infections.

    Step3

Hold the Start Key and R copy + paste the following and click OK:

    notepad %windir%/system32/Drivers/etc/hosts

A new file will open. If you are hacked, there will be a bunch of other IPs connected to you at the bottom. Look at the image below:

    hosts_opt (1)

If there are suspicious IPs below “Localhost” – write to us in the comments.

Type msconfig in the search field and hit enter. A window will pop-up:

    msconfig_opt

Go in Startup —> Uncheck entries that have “Unknown” as Manufacturer.

    • Please note that ransomware may even include a fake Manufacturer name to its process. Make sure you check out every process here is legitimate.

    1. %AppData%
    2. %LocalAppData%
    3. %ProgramData%
    4. %WinDir%

    How to Decrypt Tohj files

Victims of ransomware may need to use a number of different tools and approaches to recover their data, as removing the malware will not automatically return it to its previous state. However, if you have been attacked, you must first identify the specific ransomware variant responsible for the data encryption. The file extensions appended to the encrypted files may provide this information.

    New Djvu Ransomware

A new variant of the Djvu ransomware, known as STOP Djvu is now spreading globally and infecting unprotected computers. Files encrypted by this virus have the .Tohj extension appended to their names. The good news is that there is a way to recover your data and avoid paying a ransom to the hackers. The decryption program from the link below may help you decode Tohj-encrypted files, encoded with an offline key.

    https://www.emsisoft.com/ransomware-decryption-tools/stop-djvu

There is a “Download” button in the page’s top right corner that you may use to get the decryption tool. A download of STOPDjvu.exe will start as soon as the button is clicked.

Right-click the executable file and select “Run as administrator” to launch the program. Read the accompanying license agreement and the instructions for use, and then click the Decrypt button to begin the decryption process. It’s important to remember that if your files cannot be decrypted by the program, it might be because they were encrypted using an online algorithm or an offline key that has not been added to the decryptor’s database.

For your file recovery to be a success, it is very important to first remove the ransomware from the infected machine. If you have a professional anti-virus application or a free online virus scanner like the ones available on this website, you can clean your computer of Tohj and other malware in no time. However, if you skip that, any files that you may potentially recover may become encrypted again. So, make sure that the system is clean of malware before you start the file-decryption process.

If you have any questions or run into any problems while attempting to follow the steps in this guide, please let us know in the comments below.

    • Please I’m in trouble, help me out. I downloaded some Apps with my dad’s laptop and it got infected with TOHJ virus. About a year ago I infected my dad’s files with pqgs virus. I’m afraid of what he will do to me if he discovers this. I wanted to try the manual option since I will not be able to afford any money, first, I am a poor boy from Kumasi in Ghana. Second, my father is struggling to raise all 8 of us. Please, kindly help me before my dad gets to know.

      • Hi, Joshua! We are sorry to read that, but If you have a New Variant online ID, there is no key for New Variant online ID. That means for now, the only other alternative to paying the ransom, is to backup/save your encrypted data as is and wait for a possible future solution if encrypted with an ONLINE KEY.
