Goobspatch is an ad-spamming browser hijacker that installs in commonly used browsers for Mac, such as Firefox, Chrome, or Safari. The main goal of Goobspatch is to bring revenue from ads to its creators.

In order to succeed in completing its goal, this app modifies the infected browser by adding a new search engine to it that replaces the old one and/or by changing the address of the homepage and new tab page. Those changes allow the hijacker to constantly redirect you to the sites it is programmed to promote as well as to fill your screen with various kinds of adverts, banners, and pop-ups. For the most part, this won’t harm your computer, but it may lead to some other indirect problems. For instance, oftentimes the advertising materials shown by apps like this one tend to be misleading and deceitful. In some cases, the promotional messages may outright lie to you or they may not even look like ads, to begin with. One example is when the hijacker is trying to get you to buy some other software so it shows you an advertisement that is designed to look like a warning message that tells you about hidden malware in your computer. The warning advises you to buy some removal tool (usually of low quality, or one that is outright fake) in order to clean your computer from the non-existent malware. This is only one of many examples of how browser hijackers can trick users.
