Optical Rate Pro

Optical Rate Pro is a type of software that aims to convert your Chrome, Safari, Firefox or other popular web browser into an online advertising platform. Optical Rate Pro targets macOS computers in particular and is what it widely referred to as a browser hijacker.

Browser hijackers are a common type of software, but in the past they were always the worry of Windows OS users. Today, things are different, and more and more Mac users are starting to report instances of browser hijacker infections, exactly like with Optical Rate Pro.

The good news is that this software isn’t a virus or malware of some sort, contrary to popular belief. Hence, it won’t directly harm your computer or in any other way try to undermine you. But the bad news is that it is quite invasive and it will literally hijack your browser by taking over its settings and altering its configurations to meet its needs.

What this means is that you will likely start facing changes made to your browser’s search engine and its homepage, for example. You may also see new elements added to the browser’s interface. And on top of that, your browser may take up a life of its own as it starts to trigger spontaneous page redirects to random sponsored websites. Furthermore, you will probably already have come to notice the uncanny increase in the amount of banners and popups you see on a daily basis. This is all Optical Rate Pro’s work, and there’s a lot more going on in the background that you’re not even seeing.

What we can offer you here is a removal guide to help you uninstall Optical Rate Pro from your system manually, as browser hijackers are notoriously stubborn when it comes to their removal. This is the only way you will be able to reconfigure your web browser and return to an ad-free browsing experience.

Optical Rate Pro for Mac

Optical Rate Pro for Mac can be very intrusive due to the Pay Per Click advertising mechanisms it uses to generate profit for its developers. For this same purpose, Optical Rate Pro for Mac may constantly have background processes launched that can slow your computer down.

After all, the generation of online ads may be a rather tedious process requiring a fair share of system resources namely RAM and CPU. In the long term, this may indeed result in overall system sluggishness, and it may even affect the performance of other apps on your computer, not to mention the browser itself.

What is Optical Rate Pro?

Another reason users may want to remove Optical Rate Pro from their computer is its association with malware. Although Optical Rate Pro is not itself malicious code, its presence may make your system more vulnerable to external threats such as Trojans, ransomware, rootkits and more.

The OpticalRatePro Malware

The OpticalRatePro malware is typically distributed in so-called software bundles together with other applications. This ensures that the OpticalRatePro malware can be installed on one’s computer without the user necessarily realizing what they are doing.

An easy way to prevent this from happening is to always opt for the custom settings of any installation manager and pay close attention to each step of the process.

Optical Rate Pro Removal from Mac

The Removal of Optical Rate Pro may be a tricky process, but before you dig deep in the manual removal guide below, we offer you a quick method that will not take much of your time and may help you to remove Optical Rate Pro from your Mac browser:

  1. Launch the Mac browser that is behaving oddly and click on its main menu.
  2. From the menu, select Preferences.
  3. Once in Preferences, navigate to Extensions and open it.
  4. Carefully look at all extensions installed there and search for any unfamiliar entries that could be related to Optical Rate Pro.
  5. Once you detect such extensions, remove them by clicking on the trash bin icon.

After you do the steps above, restart your browser and use it for some time to see if Optical Rate Pro has been successfully removed. If not, then we advise you to proceed with the detailed instructions below to remove the browser hijacker from all system locations.

For the proper application of the steps below, it is needed that the hijacked browser should be closed. Therefore, Quit Safari if it is open or if it doesn’t want to quit, go to the Apple menu and select the Force Quit option.

Next, move to the instructions in step 2 and complete everything just as it is shown.

Step2

In this step, you will have to find and stop all processes that have a relation to the browser hijacker and are running in the background of your Mac system. To do that, open Finder and go to activity-monitor

Once you launch the Activity Monitor search the processes list for questionable-looking processes that use a lot of system resources without a particular reason or have unusual names.

If you detect something that you believe is part of Optical Rate Pro and its activity, highlight it and click the “i” button at the top. This will open an information box that looks like this:

chromeinfo

Click on the Sample button at the bottom. After you do this, a sample file of the selected process will be generated.

chromesample

That file needs to be saved and then scanned with a trusted malware scanner.

You can create a sample for every process that you believe could be dangerous and scan it with the free online scanner listed below. If the results from the scan show that the sample is dangerous, then you should end the related process from the Activity Monitor by selecting it and clicking on the X button (next to the i button) at the top.

Each file will be scanned with up to 64 antivirus programs to ensure maximum accuracy
This scanner is free and will always remain free for our website's users.
This file is not matched with any known malware in the database. You can either do a full real-time scan of the file or skip it to upload a new file. Doing a full scan with 64 antivirus programs can take up to 3-4 minutes per file.

    Step3

After you have ended all processes that you think are causing you trouble, you need to start the Safari browser safely. This can be done by pressing the Shift key from the keyboard and launching the browser at the same time.

If after you do that, some unwanted pages related to the browser hijacker open up on their own in Safari, Force Quit the browser and disconnect your Mac from the internet until you complete the next few steps.

To switch off your Wi-Fi connection, simply go to your Mac’s Menu and select Wi-Fi Off. If you are connected through a cable internet, remove the cable from the computer. Then, try Shift-launching Safari again.

    Step4

With Safari launched in the manner explained above, go to the Safari menu and click on Preferences.

    Preferences in Safari

Once you open it, you will see a number of icons with tabs. Find the Extensions tab and open it:

    extensions in safari

Then search the Extensions list for entries that Optical Rate Pro might have installed without your knowledge or approval. If you find any, uninstall them. Do the same for other potentially unwanted extensions that you don’t want to keep in the browser.

    Step5

If you are using not just Safari, but Firefox or Chrome as well, the instructions below will show you how to remove Optical Rate Pro from them.  It is important that you apply the instructions for all browsers even if they are not your primary choice because the browser hijacker might still have made some changes to them that need to be revoked.

In Safari, there are a few more locations that you need to check for potentially unwanted alternations.

Open again Preferences from the Safari Menu, and click on the Privacy tab:
    Privacy in Safari

Next, select Remove All Website Data and confirm your action by clicking on Remove Now.

Important! All stored website data will be deleted after you confirm this action. A sign-in will be required for all websites that need any form of authentication.

    Back in Preferences, select General:

    General Tab in Safari

Check the Homepage section to see if the URL that is written there has been replaced with a sponsored address. If it is, remove it and type an address that you want to be your homepage.
    Default Home Page

After that, click on the History menu and select the Clear History option to delete any data about sites and pages loaded by the browser hijacker.

I’ve purchased and downloaded multiple antivirus programs and they identify the virus but can’t remove it. The MacBook is only like 8 months old. I don’t know what else to do. Please help.
