Pwz2 is a browser hijacker compatible with Mac browsers that takes control of the affected browser’s settings without permission from the user. Pwz2 is primarily used as a site-promoting tool that forces page redirects in the browser in order to boost the view count of certain sites.

The Pwz2 Virus will make unwanted changes to your browser.

If you are struggling to get this undesirable app removed from your Safari, Chrome, or Firefox browser on Mac, know that you are not the only one faced with this predicament. While the hijacker isn’t the most dangerous or problematic piece of software you could get installed on your computer, it’s also most certainly not particularly safe or desirable either.

One of the first signs that should draw your attention to the presence of this software on your computer is the change of the homepage and the default search engine of the browser. Those modifications have the purpose of helping the hijacker advertise things on your screen with greater effectiveness. Something particularly annoying about the changes introduced by the hijacker is that they cannot be reversed unless the unwanted app gets fully uninstalled.

Pwz2 for Mac

Pwz2 for Mac is a browser-redirecting tool created for the sole purpose of providing certain sites with greater exposure and improved ratings. Pwz2 for Mac will take control of different browser settings and constantly cause redirects to the sites it has been created to promote.

If you don’t know how to stop this rogue app from spamming your browser with site-promotions, know that we’ve got you covered. Within the guide you will see right after this post, you will find detailed instructions on how you can, on your own, remove Pwz2 from your Mac, thereby freeing your browser from its ads and unwanted modifications. Just make sure to first finish the rest of the article to learn more about the unwanted app you are currently dealing with.

What is Pwz2?

Pwz2 is a junkware application that “steals” the browser’s settings and then tries to expose the user to different sites and product ads. Pwz2 gains access to the search and browsing histories which allows it to display banners and popups that are more relevant to the user’s preferences.

It’s no secret that most sites and also a lot of apps and programs keep tabs on the searches you make and the sites you visit so that they could later use this info for more streamlined advertising. However, in most cases, users are allowed to choose just how much advertising info they want to allow to be gathered from their browsers. A hijacker, on the other hand, would hardly ever give you the option to choose that, meaning it will most likely end up obtaining data you don’t want to be made public.

The Pwz2 Virus

The Pwz2 virus is an invasive and unwanted browser attachment for Mac browsers. The Pwz2 virus is focused on automatic ad-generation and site-promotion, which could sometimes potentially lead to the computer’s exposure to phishing pages, fake offers, and even Trojan horse and Ransomware viruses.

If you don’t want to risk exposing your computer to any harmful Trojans, Ransomware file-encrypting viruses, or other forms of harmful malware, we urge you to complete the removal guide from the next lines:

Name Pwz2
Type Browser Hijacker
Danger Level Medium (nowhere near threats like Ransomware, but still a security risk)

We get asked this a lot, so we are putting it here: Removing parasite manually may take hours and damage your system in the process. We recommend downloading SpyHunter to see if it can detect parasite files for you.

The first thing you need to do is to Quit Safari (if it is opened). If you have trouble closing it normally, you may need to Force Quit Safari:

You can choose the Apple menu and click on Force Quit.

Alternatively, you can simultaneously press (the Command key situated next to the space bar), Option (the key right next to it) and Escape (the key located at the upper left corner of your keyboard).

If you have done it right a dialog box titled Force Quit Applications will open up.

In this new dialog window select Safari, then press the Force Quit button, then confirm with Force Quit again.

Close the dialog box/window.

To remove parasite on your own, you may have to meddle with system files and registries. If you were to do this, you need to be extremely careful, because you may damage your system.

If you want to avoid the risk, we recommend downloading SpyHunter
a professional malware removal tool.

First, Force Quit Safari again.

Now if you are using a Wi-Fi connection turn it off by selecting Wi-Fi off in you Mac’s Menu. If you are using a cable internet (Ethernet connection), disconnect the Ethernet cable.

Re-Launch Safari but don’t forget to press and hold the Shift button while doing it, so no previous pages can be opened up. Now, Click on Preferences in the Safari menu,

Preferences in Safari

and then again on the Extensions tab,

Select and Uninstall any extensions that you don’t recognize by clicking on the Uninstall button. If you are not sure and don’t want to take any risks you can safely uninstall all extensions, none are required for normal system operation.

The threat has likely infected all of your browsers. The instructions below need to be applied for all browsers you are using.

Again select Preferences in the Safari Menu, but this time click on the Privacy tab,
Privacy in Safari

Now click on Remove All Website Data, confirm with Remove Now. Keep in mind that after you do this all stored website data will be deleted. You will need to sign-in again for all websites that require any form of authentication.

Still in the Preferences menu, hit the General tab
